Boat Quay restaurants and bars

Think Singaporean nightlife and Boat Quay is right up there with destinations that come to mind. As the sister stretch to the colourful, nightclub-spotted Clarke Quay, Boat Quay is where laidback bars, pubs and restaurants offer respite past 6pm. It’s not just all pints and deep-fried bar snacks here either, as the diverse selection of bars and restaurants in Boat Quay glimmer with plenty of choices for the hungry and thirsty. From a rooftop bar that specialises in gin and oysters to affordable Taiwanese street food, we round up some of the best Boat Quay restaurants and bars to unwind at.

1. Hans Im Gluck

German-style burger franchise Hans Im Gluck is a gourmet burger joint that offers healthy options too. Expect classic choices and some intriguing takes on burgers—the Alsdann ($17++), for example, sees a beef burger spruced up with grilled pear, fig jam and brie—as well as the option to build your own meal the way you like it. Sourdough or multigrain buns, grilled chicken or beef, low-carb, and even vegan or vegetarian options are all fair game at Hans Im Gluck. Set meals are available all day long, so for an extra $5, you get a side and a non-alcoholic drink, while an extra $9 gets you a cocktail.

2. The Salted Plum

Formerly the affordable dining joint Five Ten, Salted Plum has reinvented itself as a go-to destination for Taiwanese street food staples. Braised Pork ($15), better known as lu rou, Five Spice Fried Chicken ($15), and Crab Omelette ($20) are clear crowd favourites, but don’t skip out on the underdogs. The charred Brussel Sprouts ($10) and Taiwanese Sausage Patties ($10) are a must too. The best part? The menu is conveniently priced according to fives, so most dishes range from just $5 to $20, excluding the lunchtime rice bowls which are from $12 to $18.

If you love Wagyu, you have to go to Aburi-ya. This yakiniku restaurant offers a hefty selection of Wagyu beef and cuts sourced from around Japan, best enjoyed with their classic cocktails or sakes. For those who don’t feel like grilling your own meats indoors, opt to dine at the terrace instead, where a different menu of Japanese fusion dishes are available. Wagyu still remains the star, of course, so choose from steaks, stews, and even Wagyu sushi for dinner.

4. The Dragon Chamber

What looks like an upscale kopitiam from the outside leads to a modern Chinese eatery once you walk through the beer fridge. The Dragon Chamber is a secret restaurant that blurs the line between street food and fine dining, so menu stars include Wagyu Truffle Beef Hor Fun ($36++) and The Dragon Mountain ($88++), where premium seafood gets deep-fried and crusted with Sichuan peppercorns, garlic and soybean.  Adventurous diners can cap off their dinner with D*** Soup ($30++), where crocodile gonads play the starring role in this double-boiled broth. Food is served in sharing portions, so The Dragon Chamber is best to visit with friends or family.

Bukit Merah cafe guide

Tiong Bahru’s reign as Singapore’s lone cafe hub is dwindling, especially now that Bukit Merah is stepping up as the trendy new ‘hood in Southern Singapore.

The area’s crowning glory used to just be its dynamic duo of hawker centres, Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre and ABC Brickworks. Nowadays, the wider neighbourhood is slowly but surely a new hotspot for brunches, coffee hour and teatime thanks to the growing number of Bukit Merah cafes.

From those offering artisanal coffees and gourmet burgers to homemade gelato, here is our guide to Bukit Merah cafes.

Buffet dinners from Monday to Thursday are a little more pricey at $26.90 per adult and $24.90 for students. However, the price from Friday to Sunday will only cost an additional $1. Do note that dining durations are capped at 90 minutes for groups below three, while groups of four and above are allowed 120 minutes to feast on all the bulgogi they want.

It’s always nice to have the option to munch on affordable Japanese fare, especially if it’s omurice. Koji-San is one of the many smaller eateries in the basement of AMK Hub, and they specialise in this homely omelette dish. Their bestsellers include the Omu Curry Rice ($8.80) that you can have with either pork or chicken. Koji-San has also a more premium Iron Chef series that features dishes like Ebi Chilli with Omu Rice ($12) and Wagyu Beef Saikoro Steak with Omu Rice ($18.90).

There are also a variety of carbs you can pair your soup with, like a Pot Pie ($11.90), Bread Bowl ($10.50), Flatbread ($12.50), or Red Rice ($11.90).

The sizzling of food on the hotplate at Pepper Lunch outlets is an instantly recognisable sound. Here, you’re given the illusion of being the chef as the ingredients are merely assembled on a piping-hot teppan for you to cook to your preferred doneness. As of October 2020, Pepper Lunch has also introduced a New Zealand Rib Eye Steak ($19.90) that is served with sweet corn and broccoli on the side. Students nearby can also capitalise on the affordable student meals which start from $7.20 and include a soft drink.

GEYLANG FOOD

Geylang food places to check out

We’ve all seen Geylang supper guides featuring 126 Dim Sum and frog porridge spots. But there’s a whole uncharted territory that hasn’t been covered ─ round-the-clock dining in the red light district.

Compared to the bustling scene at night, Geylang is like a ghost town in the day, which makes it perfect for foodies to explore. Here’s a guide for people who want to explore this treasure trove of Geylang food haunts beyond just suppertime.

Please note that opening hours may differ due to current restrictions.

1. Penang Seafood Restaurant

Geylang Food Penang Seafood Restaurant

If you love Penang food as we do, head down to Penang Seafood Restaurant and try their Assam Laksa (from $4.80) or Penang Char Kway Teow (from $6). The tangy fish gravy starts off with an explosive burst of flavour and mellows into a mild heat that will leave you wanting more. The char kway teow, on the other hand, is made in true Malaysian fashion and is laced with smoky, moreish wok hei.

2. BBQ Box

If you’re new to the world of Chinese barbecue skewers, there’s no better place to get acquainted than BBQ Box. They offer a variety of meats from chicken wings to pork intestines and beef tendon. These meats are seasoned with a spicy Chinese spice rub and skewered before they are grilled to perfection over a charcoal fire. Other classic skewers you shouldn’t miss out on include enoki mushrooms, mantou, and asparagus. Skewers start at $1, so feast away on these affordable skewers and wash everything down with a bottle of Tsingtao!

3. The Skewer Bar

Geylang Food Skewer Bar

If you’re on the search for good yakitori, look no further than The Skewer Bar. Located at a corner of a kopitiam, this quiet joint is jam-packed with customers daily. The menu is extensive, with items such as Teriyaki Unagi ($3.50) and Bacon Wrapped Quail Egg ($2.40). They also have non-skewered dishes such as Oysters ($11 for three pieces) and, our favourite, Grilled Eggplant with TSB Signature Sauce ($5). Locally-inspired pasta and rice bowls are also available, with the Lu Rou Pasta ($10.90) being a hot favourite.

4. Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh

Geylang Food Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh

There are two kinds of people in the world: people who love the peppery style of Teochew bak kut teh, and people who love Malaysia’s herbal version. If you’re a fan of Klang bak kut teh, Leong Kee Bak Kut Teh ($7.70) is a must-try. The soup is full of aromatic herbal notes, and the pork ribs are fork-tender and well infused with earthy flavours.

For greater satisfaction, pile on the beancurd skin and get ready to sweat it out over this robust pork stock. Leong Kee also does a mean Stewed Pork’s Leg ($7.70), so brace yourself for a feast if you happen to find yourself on this side of Geylang. Their Dry Bak Kut Teh ($10) also comes highly recommended.

5. Swee Guan Hokkien Mee

Geylang Food Swee Guan Hokkien Mee

Opened in 1968, Swee Guan Hokkien Mee, or better known as Geylang Lorong 29 Hokkien Mee, serves one of the best hae mee I’ve ever tried. Prepared the traditional way over a charcoal fire, the noodles are laced with a wok hei aroma. Plus, they are pretty generous with the ingredients, and the prawns are juicy and crunchy. A wait is, of course, necessary, as this spot is really famous. Prices start at $6 for a plate.

6. Mongkok Dim Sum

Geylang Food Mong Kok Dim sum
Open 24 hours, Mongkok Dim Sum was my go-to supper joint when I was living in the East. On the menu are an array of dishes, priced at an average of $5. An interesting dish to order is their 3 Yolk Crab Porridge ($9), which can easily satisfy the bellies of three to four people. Their Custard Bun ($4.20) is done right too, and a pool of smooth, runny custard spilled out as we broke open the pillowy bao.

7. Geylang Claypot Rice

Geylang Food Geylang Claypot Rice

There’s a reason why Geylang Claypot Rice commands a long queue. The wait for their Signature Claypot Rice ($16.80 for two, $28.80 for four, $38.80 for six people) can range anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour, and the owners advise customers to call ahead to make their orders. It might feel like a great deal of effort just for a meal, but it’ll all be worth it once you mix that fluffy, charred rice up and pop a piece of succulent chicken into your mouth.

8. Koung’s Wanton Mee

Geylang Food Koung’s Wanton Mee

A taxi driver was the one who introduced me to Koung’s Wanton Mee. And you know you can trust a cabbie’s food recommendation. Around since 1964, the humble stall roasts their char siew in a charcoal oven, which boasts a good ratio of fats to tender meat. The egg noodles were firm too, and glistened with their house-made chilli sauce that packed a fiery punch! Prices start at $4.

Address: 205 Sims Avenue, Singapore 387506
Opening hours: Mon 8:30am to 7:30pm, Tues-Sun 8am to 8:30pm

9. Hong Qin Fish & Duck Porridge

Geylang Food Hong Qin Fish & Duck Porridge

$8 at Hong Qin Fish & Duck Porridge will get you a liberal amount of flavourful pig trotters served alongside rice. The meat could have been more tender, but the sauce was not cloying or salty. Their fish soup ($5) fared much better, with the clear savoury broth and generous slices of fresh fish. Although Piao Ji Fish Soup still ranks first in our hearts, this is an alternative that doesn’t involve a 30-minute wait!

Address: 134 Geylang East Avenue 1, #01-217, Singapore 380134
Opening hours: Daily 5:45am to 3:30pm

10. L32 Handmade Noodles

Geylang Food L32 Handmade noodles

Foodies seeking one of the best ban mian in Singapore must head down to L32 Handmade Noodles. You can immediately taste the difference once you take a bite of their firm yet bouncy noodles ─ it is worlds apart from the factory-made noodles most stalls use. The broth is also not at all oily, and the ingredients they use are of superb quality. This bowl of ultimate comfort food is definitely worth battling the heat for! Prices go from $4 and they even have a Mala Dry Chicken Ban Mian ($5.50).

11. Bali Nasi Lemak

Having been around in Geylang since 1985, Bali Nasi Lemak is a casual dinner and supper eatery that serves “Chinese-style” nasi lemak. Pick and choose what liao you’d like to go with your coconut rice, whether it be the classic crispy fried chicken, otah, sambal petai or their special kicap manis fried chicken, which comes glazed in the sweet and sticky brown sauce. Expect to spend around $7 a person.

Good banh mi is not the easiest to come by, but at Banh Mi Thit, you can be rest assured that you’re getting as close to the banh mi you get in Vietnam as possible. Even the price point is wallet-friendly. Unlike the usual sub-$10 tag, all sandwiches at Banh Mi Thit are just $3.80, filled with your choice of chicken, beef or egg, fresh vegetables and a special secret sauce. The humble eatery also has Vietnamese coffee ($1.80), which costs just $1 when you order it with a banh mi.

Whether you buy into the fact that Sia Kee Duck Rice makes Singapore’s best boneless braised duck rice or not, it can’t be denied that this Geylang hawker is a staple in the neighbourhood.  The duck is tender and marinated well, drenched in gravy and served along with a herbal soup made from scratch daily. Opt to have it with either yam rice or porridge. If you are dining with companions, get the Mixed Duck Platter ($18), which comes with duck meat, egg, fishcake, peanuts and beansprouts.

Yong He Soy Milk is on every foodie’s guide to Taipei because it is a quintessential breakfast destination. The Taiwanese cafe specialises in soy milk, beancurd, egg crepe, and you tiao, so good that there are snaking queues even at 5:30am. Their Singapore outlet resides in Geylang, serving the same fare, but 24 hours a day. Their Saltish Beancurd ($2.50), topped with minced meat, is definitely a unique bowlful that all tau huey fans should try, best paired with their Mochi Youtiao ($3).

1. Numazu Uogashizushi

PARCO Numazu Uogashizushi - Miso Nikomi Wazen 1

Numazu Uogashizushi’s 100AM outlet brings with it more than 40 years of experience serving sushi in its native Shizuoka. The seafood served is flown direct from the Numazu Fish Market, where they are one of the few sushi restaurants with exclusive auction rights to the freshest fish each day. We had thick, fresh cuts of salmon and aged maguro sashimi in the Miso Nikomi Wazen ($35) set, which also featured a claypot of stewed miso udon with mixed tempura and a bowl of Japanese rice.

PARCO Numazu Uogashizushi - Miso Nikomi Wazen 2

If the sashimi and tempura weren’t enough to tempt you, you can be sure you’re getting a good deal with the claypot miso udon. It comes with a good serving of hearty, thick udon, assorted mushrooms, chicken, and a wobbly egg too! Have it with the rice for a comforting and most satisfying meal.

3. Yakiniku Heijoen

PARCO Yakiniku Heijoen - Heijoen Kalbi Set (Japanese A5 Wagyu) 1

Founded in Tokyo way back in 1970, Yakiniku Heijoen is a purveyor of kuroge wagyu, a prized category of beef. It is specially aged and marinated in an original sauce that is specially concocted in-house. Here’s a great lunch deal that you shouldn’t miss: the Heijoen Kalbi Set ($24.90) comes with eight slices of prime A5 wagyu ─ that’s the top marbling score for Japanese beef ─ cooked over a hot charcoal grill at your table.

PARCO Yakiniku Heijoen - Heijoen Kalbi Set (Japanese A5 Wagyu) 2

The set comes with kelp soup, Japanese rice, and Korean-inspired sides of marinated beansprouts and kimchi. I recommend eating this together with the grilled beef to balance out the richness of the melt-in-your-mouth meat. In case you needed your daily dose of greens, this meal also comes with a bowl of fresh salad to detract from the heaviness of the grilled beef.

4. YAYOI

PARCO YAYOI - Nasu Miso & Saba Teishoku 1

YAYOI is known for its Teishoku, or set meals, that are characteristic of Japanese everyday dining. Teishoku is centred around the humble bowl of rice, often featuring a main dish of meat or fish, a secondary main of vegetables, pickles, and soup ─ a healthy, balanced meal that is comfort food for the Japanese.

PARCO YAYOI - Nasu Miso & Saba Teishoku 4

We had the Nasu Miso & Saba Teishoku ($16.90), a set meal that comes with salt-grilled saba and a dish of eggplant, pork slices and green peppers stir-fried with miso. It may seem a little strong when you have it on its own, but the savoury, caramelised miso went extremely well with the plain rice. It makes a simple meal if you want something other than salad.

5. Saboten

PARCO Saboten - Oyster & Tenderloin Set 1

Yet another traditional Japanese institution, Saboten has been serving tonkatsu since 1966. This tonkatsu specialist uses a select breed of pig for their signature loin katsu, and freshly grated breadcrumbs for all of their fried items. From now till 31 March 2021, come to Saboten for the Hiroshima Large-Size Oyster Festival and sink your teeth into these plump, creamy molluscs that are harvested in Hiroshima Bay.

PARCO Saboten - Oyster & Tenderloin Set 3

For $33.50, the Oyster & Tenderloin Set comes with a side of chawanmushi and free flow of 100% Uonuma Koshihikari Japanese rice imported from Japan, miso soup, as well as shredded cabbage that you can have with the katsu. If you needed more reasons to visit Saboten, they’re now offering dine-in customers a $20 return voucher with a minimum spend of $60 (before service charge and GST), which is available until fully redeemed.

6. SABAR

PARCO Sabar - Sabar Jumbo Maki (10pcs) 1

SABAR is a word play on the mackerel, saba, that appears in every dish on this bar’s menu. Only top quality wild-caught toro saba from the North Pacific Coast of Japan is used here, and the SABAR Jumbo Maki ($38) definitely celebrates this fattier, tastier saba. The monster-sized roll comes in 10 huge slices. It features Shime Toro Saba, which is cured in a vinegar that’s blended in-house, and 12 other fillings including salmon and hotate sashimi!

See if you can stuff the entire slice of this maki in your mouth at once, because while I couldn’t, my dining companion says it’s an explosion of flavours that go perfectly together. If you’re dining here alone, go for half a roll at $23.80.

8. Ma Maison Kitchen

PARCO Ma Maison Kitchen - Beef Stroganoff with omurice 1

“Ma maison” is French for “my home”, and walking into Ma Maison Kitchen feels just like you’ve entered a warm, cosy home. They’re another grand dame in the Japan food scene, with more than 30 years serving Japanese-Western cuisine under their belt.

Here at Ma Maison Kitchen, the Beef Stroganoff with Omurice ($16.80) is the hot favourite amongst Japanese diners. Omurice, for many of them, is the dish of their childhoods. It’s jazzed up at Ma Maison Kitchen with house-made beef stroganoff, made with a demi-glace that’s stewed for precisely 28 days under the strict quality control of the group’s head chef.

PARCO Ma Maison Kitchen - Beef Stroganoff with omurice

The silken omelette sits on garlic butter-fried rice, the highlight of which is the garlic butter that is also made in-house. Even my dining companion, who doesn’t eat beef, wiped this plate clean.

With its homey ambience and cosy nooks, Ma Maison Kitchen is perfect for your next date night destination. Furthermore, get a $20 return voucher with any minimum spend of $50 before service charge and GST for use at Ma Maison Kitchen, only available for dine-in customers until this promotion is fully redeemed.

9. Menya Kokoro

PARCO Menya Kokoro - Zenbu All-in Mazesoba 1

Japan’s most popular mazesoba chain, Menya Kokoro, needs no further introduction. Translated, mazesoba literally means “mixing noodles”, and that’s precisely what you need to do when your bowl is served to get the noodles evenly coated in the luscious meat sauce.

PARCO Menya Kokoro - Zenbu All-in Mazesoba

The Zenbu All-In Mazesoba (from $15.30) is so packed with ingredients that mixing it up gets a little bit tough. First world problems aside, the thick, chewy noodles are ideal for the rich gravy. Head down to Menya Kokoro quick, because the first 100 dine-in orders at Menya Kokoro are entitled to a complimentary value add-on worth $3.90 from the menu with every order of one Zenbu All-in Mazesoba!

10. EMMA

PARCO Emma - Sundae Matcha 1

EMMA’s soft serve inspires crowds of locals to line up at its seven outlets in Japan, even today. Their soft serves are made with premium Japanese milk, among other high quality Japanese ingredients that give it its signature rich and creamy texture.

PARCO Emma - Sundae Matcha

The Sundae Matcha ($4.50) is a classic pairing of matcha and azuki, a harmonious blend of slightly bitter green tea and the soft, nutty sweetness of red bean. While sweet, the azuki is not overly so. Dig all the way to the bottom of the cup and be rewarded with the cornflakes that provide an element of crunch to the otherwise-smooth sundae!

Maxwell Food Centre guide

Working in the CBD doesn’t necessarily mean eating atas salads and sipping on Starbucks all day long. There is plenty of affordable hawker fare around the area in places like Amoy Street Food Centre at Telok Ayer, and of course, Maxwell Food Centre near Tanjong Pagar.  As this heritage hawker centre gets busy over lunch, options can be overwhelming, so here’s our list of stalls we think you shouldn’t miss when you’re at Maxwell Food Centre!

1. Old Nonya

Maxwell Food Centre Old Nonya

While I didn’t get to try it, the Laksa ($3) is supposed to be creamier and better than the other options in Maxwell.

Despite its popularity and long-standing history, prices are still kept low at $3 for a bowl generously topped with ingredients. Go for their sliced fish with shredded chicken and century egg ($3) to get the best of everything.

Directly translated, Yi Jia Chou Zhou Yu Zhou means “one house Teochew fish porridge fish soup”. The stall sees a constantly long queue at lunch hour, and no wonder. Order their Batang Fish ($3) and be treated to a clear, delicate broth boasting chunks of silky smooth fish slices.

Unit number: #01-66

5.  Hainanese Curry Rice

Maxwell Food Centre Hainanese Curry Rice

Hainanese Curry Rice may not be as popular as their competitors, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t as good. Doused in a rich, creamy curry sauce and topped with your choice of protein and vegetables ($0.70 per portion), this is one hot mess I will definitely order again and again. A must-get is their crispy pork chop ($1.50 per portion) and pork belly ($1.50 per portion) that goes really well with the curry.

6. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

Tian Tian Chicken Rice

Their rice is fragrant, and the chicken succulent. They are the most popular chicken rice stall in Singapore known to locals and tourists, with branches even in Hong Kong. Even so, prices here start from a friendly $3.50.

Maxwell Fu Zhou Oyster Cake ($2) is one of the few stalls serving this soon-to-be-extinct heritage snack. Encased in the golden-brown fried cake are succulent oysters, prawns, and minced meat. Cilantro is also added to cut through any oiliness. The magic of this Fuzhou dish is its batter, which is made of a combination of ground rice and flour, resulting in an airy and crisp bite.

Maxwell Food Centre Peanut Soup (2)

Not to be confused with 75 Ah Balling at Golden Mile Food Centre, 75 Peanuts Soup only serves three things: their best-selling peanut soup, red bean soup, and tau suan, all of which are priced at only $1. The stall has been around for more than 70 years, now run by a pair of third-gen husband-and-wife team who make all three desserts from scratch.

Be sure to top up $1.50 for two glutinous rice balls filled with either sesame and/or toasty ground peanut, although these are factory-made. I highly recommend you go for the latter.

Unit number: #01-57
Opening hours: Mon-Sat 7:30am to 2pm

10. Rickshaw Noodles

Maxwell Food Centre China-Street-Rickshaw-Noodles-Economy-Noodles

Selling bowls of noodles for over 70 years, China Street Rickshaw Noodles is one of the last stalls in Singapore selling this historical dish, which used to be sustenance for rickshaw drivers in Singapore’s early days. Prices start from $1 today, unlike the 2 cents it used to cost in the 1940s.

For something sinful, order their Economy Noodles ($1/$1.50) that has a nice chewy texture, and is coated in a sweet-savoury sauce. Top it up with other fried goodies like battered prawns ($0.40 each) to complete your meal.

Suntec City food

Suntec City, Singapore’s first megamall, was a weekend haunt for many back in the day, with throngs lining up for the emblematic Fountain of Wealth, megamart Carrefour, and conventions such as IT and Travel Fairs.

With other newer megamalls in the scene now, Suntec City is no longer as crowded as it once was, but one thing still remains: its wealth of dining options. To help you make up your mind if you’re dining there, here’s our round-up of 15 Suntec City food places to have your next meal at.

Northpoint City food

Maybe it’s a joke that has gone too far, but to many Singaporeans, sans the ones living in the neighbourhood, Yishun has a bad rep. There’s even a now-defunct blog called The Yishun Dream, listing all the weird happenings in the neighbourhood, that made it onto Vice. Stranger Things aside, you’ll find that Yishun is actually a hub for great eats. Aside from the nosh at Yishun Park Hawker Centre, here are 15 Northpoint City food places also worth checking out.

1. Suparakki Ramen

Dry Truffle Ramen

Ramen isn’t typically known to be an affordable, everyday eat. Suparakki Ramen changes that with their bowls of noodles that ring in the till at under $10. Go for the Original Tonkotsu Ramen ($7.90++), or the Dry Truffle Ramen ($6.90++), which is surprisingly wallet-friendly in spite of the premium add-on.

Find out more about Suparakki Ramen!

2. Yi Qian Ling Yi Ye

Northpoint City - Yi Qian Ling Yi Ge

Yi Qian Ling Yi Ye is a steamboat restaurant that serves free-flow xiao long bao during their dinner buffet ($26.80+). The XLB is decent, and you can expect a burst of porcine goodness with each dumpling. There are 10 types of soup bases to choose from, and the most noteworthy ones are their Mala Soup and Herbal Chicken Soup. Like a sushi restaurant, the joint is fitted with a conveyor belt carrying ingredients such as fishballs and mushrooms.

3. Big Fish Small Fish

Northpoint City - Big Fish Small Fish

We are no stranger to Big Fish Small Fish. Known for their massive portions and large variety of sauces, this chippy is one of my go-to spots whenever I’m craving for fish and chips. Prices are pocket-friendly, and $8.80++ gets you a chunky Dory fish fillet with thinly cut potato crisps. Sauce is life, and without a good condiment, food may fall flat. This is why I love their salted egg and cheese sauces, which are free for you to take!

5. Pizza Maru

pizzamaru

Many have waxed lyrical about Pizza Maru’s Real BBQ Chicago ($26.80++), which comes crowned with chunks of chicken, potatoes, onions, tomatoes and mushrooms. What makes this pizza interesting is its dusting of icing sugar and almond flakes. There’s also a whole ton of cheese that’s baked into the dough, including mozzarella, string cheese and cream cheese mousse. This blend of cheeses gives their pizzas the signature cheese pull that is said to stretch as long as one metre!

One that’s great for sharing is their Rolling Cheese Chicken Wings in Honey Garlic (Price TBC). Available in a spicy version as well, this is KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) you can dip in gooey cheddar and mozzarella.

TELOK AYER CAFE

Telok Ayer cafes for chill brunch hangouts

Cafe-hopping gets a bad rep as a basic “white girl” activity. But honestly, what’s wrong with that? It’s hard not to love lazing in a beautiful cafe, sampling delicious food at each turn. Telok Ayer is well-known for its blend of street and cafe food in the CBD, with hawker behemoths like Amoy Street Food Centre just a stone’s throw from hipster hotspots such as Park Bench Deli. With such an abundance of cafe options in the area, it may be difficult to decipher what each has to offer. To help, we’ve compiled a list of 10 noteworthy Telok Ayer cafes to reward yourself after a gruelling spin class.

1. My Awesome Cafe

Since raising its shutters in 2014, Frenchman Franck Hardy’s My Awesome Cafe has become a stalwart amidst the Telok Ayer cafes, renowned for its tasty food and old-world charm. The cafe complements its throwback Chung Hwa Free Clinic facade with retro, industrial fittings inside. The bare bulbs and school desks imbue the space with vintage Singaporean charisma, even as you chow down on European cafe fare.

Their signature My Awesome Salad ($17++) is a fan favourite here, flaunting smoked salmon, herby chicken breast, duck rillettes, tomatoes and avocados with a cluster of salad leaves. I’m a certifiable carnivore who usually avoids ordering salad, but the allure of velvety duck rillettes and sumptuous strips of smoked salmon is wickedly tempting.

An expansive menu is available here, particularly for drinks. They have homemade sodas, along with coffee, tea, and a wide range of boozy options too.

Address: 202 Telok Ayer Street, Singapore 068639
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8:45am to 12am, Sat-Sun 8am to 12am
Tel: 6222 2007

2. Merci Marcel

While our previous French cafe integrated Asian culture, Merci Marcel remains firmly entrenched in its roots, making customers feel like they’ve been whisked off to a pretty Parisian street. Expanding from its original space in Tiong Bahru, this Club Street outlet has a stylish yet relaxed vibe, the kind of place you’d imagine a gaggle of pretty Parisian people would spend their Saturday at.

telok ayer cafes merci marcel food

It seems almost rudely stereotypical to order French Toast ($17++) at a French cafe, but whoever Marcel is, his rendition of this brunch classic is stonking. Fluffy and lightly crisp brioche slices are bathed in berries and honey for a decadent way to start the morning. This is only, however, on their brunch menu, available from 8am to 5pm.

Marinated Crab Tartine ($19++) is a less conventional route for brunch, featuring sourdough bread capped by marinated crab and avocado. During dinnertime, sharing plates dominate the menu, with Tarte Flambee ($25++), a thin crust pizza with blue cheese, apple and bacon, and Duck Parmentier ($27++) ranking amongst the most popular choices.

Address: 7-9 Club Street, Singapore 069403
Opening hours: Daily 9am to 10:30pm

3. French Fold

french fold ambience

French Fold, the new sister cafe to Merci Marcel, may be new, but it made its presence in Singapore known with aplomb. Specialising in Breton buckwheat galettes and French crepes, the bistro is complete with a chic Paris-style interior, framed by lush greenery.

french fold galette

When it comes to food, go for the No.4 ($17), where a crispy crepe nestles cheese, egg, ham, and mushrooms, and finish off strong with any of their sweets on the menu. We love the Manuka Honey ($10) crepe topped with a scoop of Sea Salt Hojicha ice cream from Birds of Paradise, but we hear rave things about the No.21 ($12) too, topped with poached pear and dark Valrhona chocolate sauce.

Check out our full review of French Fold.

4. Sarnies

@meeniemee

Ask your nearest “white girl” about their favourite Telok Ayer cafes and Sarnies will invariably enter the conversation. This Australian-inspired cafe has become an absolute fixture in Singapore’s cafe scene, with its unpretentious and comfortable atmosphere attracting a loyal legion of regular customers.

@_food_for_foodies_

“Sarnie” is a British-Australian slang for sandwiches, so you won’t go wrong ordering any of their eponymous items. Chicken Schnitzel ($14.80++) adds German influence to your lunchtime routine, featuring thick and juicy fried chicken cutlets between white bread. Grass Fed Steak ($16.80++) is their take on the classic roast beef sandwich, with a layer of steak sauce that coats sauteed mushrooms, onions and tender strips of seared steak.

5. Free The Robot

@marcellameilyne

As implied by its name, Free The Robot is an android-themed cafe, with cute robot-inspired art and accessories everywhere you look. In the evening, this eccentric cafe undergoes a complete metamorphosis, becoming Bitter and Love, an uber-cool cocktail bar.

telok ayer cafes free the robot food

Affordable cafe food is increasingly difficult to find in Singapore, but this quirky joint offers some of the cheapest brunch bites in the CBD. Despite its relatively cheap price tag, the FTR Beef Burger ($15+) makes no compromise on quality. Unpretentious and satisfying, the burger is headlined by a juicy beef patty and robust rashers of bacon, with backup from a jiggly sunny-side-up egg.

For a fresh start to the day that won’t empty your pockets, Eggs and Toast ($8+) and Free The Robot Signature Coffee ($6.50+) comes to mind, the latter being a coconut-oil laced espresso.

6. Park Bench Deli

telok ayer cafes park bench deli ambience

Park Bench Deli is arguably Singapore’s premier sandwich specialist, serving up a wide range of bread-based brunch options inspired by the classic American deli. Located across the road from Amoy Street Food Centre, this perennially popular cafe is packed like sardines every weekend, so be sure to come at off-peak hours for a more relaxing sandwich experience.

@sandwich.edit

Philly cheesesteak is a decadent American classic that’s hard to find in Singapore, but the Pastrami Reuben ($24+) is one of their most popular items. Copious amounts of house-brined pastrami brisket are layered with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut, then served on sourdough. For the more adventurous, try the Hot Fried Chicken ($16), where spicy fried chicken thigh meets a sesame potato bun.

To sate your sweet tooth, PB-Stuffed French Toast ($16+) is the only option sandwich-wise. While it may seem like a steep price to pay for something that can be made at home in two minutes, this version kicks your Smuckers-and-Gardenia creation up a few notches. Artisanal rhubarb and strawberry jam made in-house is spread onto thick brioche French toast slices, along with a creamy almond hazelnut butter— a sugar high to start your day.

Address: 179 Telok Ayer Street, Singapore 068627
Opening hours: Tues-Sun 11am to 8pm
Tel: 6815 4600

7. Pantler

telok ayer cafes pantler ambience

Across the road from Park Bench Deli, Pantler is a modern bakery and patisserie that delivers a selection of picturesque confectioneries. While the black logo may elicit numerous Black Panther references, “pantler” is actually a term meaning “a servant or officer in charge of the bread and the pantry in a great family”. It’s a manifestation of the owners’ commitment to seriously good bakes, as well as their efforts to create a familial atmosphere in the cafe.

telok ayer cafes pantler food

Yatsura ($9.50 for a slice) is their flagship cake; a cacophony of chocolate and hazelnut, perfect for people who eat Nutella by the spoonful. Cakes aside, an assortment of other baked goods is up for grabs, such as eclairs and tarts. Especially notable is their Cassis Mont Blanc Tart ($9.50), where a mountain of fragrant chestnut paste meets a buttery tart shell.

Address: 198 Telok Ayer Street, Singapore 068637
Opening hours: Mon-Sat 10:30am to 5:30pm
Tel: 6221 6223

8. Dapper Coffee

telok ayer cafes dapper coffee unicorn tears

Dapper Coffee should be your go-to cafe if you’re in need of a bit of sparkle to brighten up your day. Its dark, woody colour scheme and rack of alcohol bottles create a strange fusion of cafe and bar vibes, which is understandable considering that it turns into a pub, The Spiffy Dapper, at night.

Most popular is the sparkly, photogenic, sky-blue Unicorn Tears ($10). I’m not sure how comfortable I am drinking fluids from a mythical creature, but it certainly makes for an eye-catching IG story!

There’s a series of house-made bakes up for grabs, but for a substantial meal, the kitchen also has sandwiches, and other mains like Japanese Currry Rice, and Mac & Cheese, all for $16.

On weekdays, their breakfast menu includes classics like the Steak And Egg Sandwich ($13.90), as well as the high-protein Breakfast Keto Burrito Bowl ($18.90), and the Keto Pancake Stack ($17.90). Weekends see their brunch menu expand to all-day options, so you can get gems like Blueberry Protein Pancakes ($18) from 9am to 7pm.

Singapore’s OG cupcakery, Plain Vanilla, has a Telok Ayer cafe with an array of cafe-style fare to start your weekend on a sweet note. Their weekend brunch runs from 8am to 4pm, with classics like Eggs Benedict ($18) and French Toast With Mixed Berries ($18).

11. Genius Central

Nestled in Far East Square is Genius Central, a whole foods haven amongst the Telok Ayer cafes that focuses on meals that are good for you. Most of the menu is vegan-friendly, and include gluten-free choices too.

Don’t let that put you off, as nothing on the menu is lacking in flavour. Their Savoury French Toast ($14) for instance, is a medley of rustic sourdough, fresh cherry tomato, herbs and greens, while the Potato Hash ($16) features a hefty potato hash brown dressed with poached egg, and a crisp salad. For something a touch more classic, there’s the Smashed Avocado ($14), which uses creamy Mexican a avocados to dress toast. They also have coffees and fresh juices to accompany your meal.

Address: 7-13 Amoy Street, #01-01, Far East Square, Singapore 049949
Opening hours: Mon-Sat 8:30am to 9:30pm, Sun 8am to 4pm

12. LUNA

Luna seating

LUNA may be new, but this patisserie has already made a name for itself as a go-to cafe if your idea of a good brunch is just desserts. Their cakes are inspired by Asian flavours and taste as good as they look.

Luna cakes

One of the most famous cakes to order is the Orh Nee Cake ($8), where a fragrant yam paste is layered over a vanilla sponge. Our personal favourite, though, is a toss-up between the aromatic Matcha White Chocolate ($8), and the Hojicha Tiramisu ($8). The latter gives you big-time IG opportunities, given that it flows like a waterfall when taken out of its plastic shell.

Check out our full review of LUNA.

Opening hours: Mon-Fri 12pm to 6:30pm, Sat-Sun 12pm to 4pm

This all-American chain was founded in 1952, and till this day promises only the freshest, never-frozen ingredients in all their food, all made to order.

fatburger

If a regular single patty is never enough, the whopping Triple (XXXL) Fatburger ($16.50) should do the trick. Pile on the protein and carbs with a Chilli Cheese Fries ($5.90) on the side. For the non-burger eater, there’s always Buffalo’s Chicken Bone-In Wings (from $7) from Buffalo’s Express, a co-brand that shares the limelight with Fatburger. Pick from eight different sauces in varying levels of spiciness, or get them without. The wings come in a Buffalo’s Boneless Chicken (from $7.50) option, and there’s also salad for a less sinful meal.

2. Fish & Co.

For those of us old enough, homegrown fish and chips chain Fish & Co. may be most fondly remembered for its Glass House outlet along Orchard Road. Bring your kids and give them the same happy memories at this branch, situated behind the multi-storied glass facade of Velocity@Novena Square. An oldie but a goodie, the Mussels with GLBS ($14.95++) is an award-winning starter, best mopped up with the accompanying garlic bread.

fish and co

Of course, you can’t miss Fish & Co.’s ultra-crispy Best Fish & Chips ($19.95++), drizzled with that house special lemon butter sauce. Good for sharing is the Seafood Platter (from $24.95++), that comes with an assortment of seafood, French fries, and paella rice.

Another quintessentially Chinese dish is the famed xiao long bao, or Steamed Juicy Meat Bun ($8++) as it’s known here. Double-boiled for hours, this broth is enriched with bonito and topped with melt-in-your-mouth slices of pork cheek.

We enjoyed the Hainanese Chicken Burger ($14.90), the highlight of which was a juicy, flavourful chicken thigh marinated and fried in a Hainanese spice mix. At $8.90, the ChocoNana Shake may seem costly, but it’s a luscious drink enriched with bananas that anyone, young and old, will love.

Each bowl of snow ice comes with one topping of your choice─we went for Oreo crumbles with Handsome Bear ($8.90), which is milk tea in shaved ice form. If you’re looking for something fruity, the Butterfly Pea Fruit Snow Ice ($10.90) is coloured with the blue flower, and we accompanied it with fruit konjac, made in-house with dragonfruit and passionfruit.

Hoshino Coffee is best known for their delectable yoshoku, or Western-inspired Japanese cuisine. This Christmas, drop by and have some coffee and sweets in the wooden-panelled store on KINEX’s second floor. If it’s raining and you’re in a seat by the window, it almost feels like you’re in Japan.

hoshino coffee

Warm your insides with a cuppa Hoshino Coffee (from $4.80), a strong brew that complements the light airiness of the Vanilla Souffle with Chocolate Sauce ($8.80). If you’re a fan of Hoshino’s souffle pancakes, go for the Christmas Pancake (from $15.50). It’s topped with indulgent chocolate sauce, assorted berries, and you get maple syrup to drizzle to taste.

With stores all over the USA, Blimpie is finally here with subs served the Blimpie Way─bigger, and better. Go for one of their MVPs: The Blimp, Blimpie Best, or the Hoboken Hero. You won’t be disappointed by the layers and layers of premium deli meat!

Our Tampines Hub food

It definitely seems as though the East has upped its rep as the best side with the plethora of new openings at Our Tampines Hub. The integrated lifestyle destination now boasts a multitude of much-loved food brands, housed under one roof. Explore dishes from around the world in the mall, with fare like ramen, mala, and more to choose from. Here are 12 Our Tampines Hub food options now in your ‘hood, Easties!

1. Gong Yuan Ma La Tang

gong yuan ma la tang our tampines hub

Gong Yuan Ma La Tang is one of the mala options available at Our Tampines Hub. Weigh your chosen ingredients, pick a base, choose your desired level of spiciness, and your bowl of mala is made to order. There are five soup and two dry bases here, both in spicy and non-spicy options. Whether you choose meat, fish, or vegetables, you’re only charged according to the total weight of food picked.

gong yuan ma la tang

We went for the Hot and Sour Mala Dressing (Dry), with a side of Hot and Sour Sweet Potato Noodles ($5.90)─piquant, mildly numbing, tangy and hot. It’s comfort food, especially fit for a rainy day. On that note, the Hot and Sour Beef Soup ($9.90) would be absolutely great with a bowl of white rice.

2. Go Noodle House

go noodle house our tampines hub

Go Noodle House is a famous Malaysian chain, known for its bursting meatballs. This is their second outlet in Singapore, and first in the East right here at Our Tampines Hub. We tried the Hakka Sauce Handmade Noodles with Century Egg ($10.80++), which came topped with molten-yolked century eggs. Toss it all together and allow the yolks to emulsify the Hakka sauce, adding richness to the mix.

go noodle house

To get more variety, add Signature Bursting Meatballs ($3.20++) to a bowl of Double Bursting Fish Ball ($14.80++). We had them with Go Noodle House’s mixian, a rice noodle similar to thick bee hoon, in Superior Soup. This comes with a shot of Chinese yellow rice wine to pour into the soup, which enhances the aroma and freshness in the broth. Do note that the last order is 30 minutes before closing time at Go Noodles House.

Unit number: #01-103
Opening hours: Mon-Thurs 11:30am to 9:30pm, Fri 11:30am to 10pm Sat 11am to 10pm, Sun 11am to 9:30pm

3. exppress by PappaRich

papparich our tampines hub

Adjacent to Go Noodle House is exppress by PappaRich, a halal option with Malaysian delights. Try the signature Hainan Bread ($3.80), which has a rich history of over 70 years. Have it steamed or toasted, both of which come with slatherings of coconutty kaya and butter. The KL Hokkien Mee ($10.80) is served fresh from the stove, perfumed with wok hei, and lip smackingly good.

papparich

We couldn’t leave without trying the Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken ($8.80), which is another signature at PappaRich. Here’s a curious fact: the fried chicken is not dipped into any batter! The story goes that rather than sell PappaRich the recipe for his fried chicken, the original maker decided to join the chain, and marinate their fried chicken for them instead. We tried it, and were floored by the super-crisp skin, and juicy meat within.

Unit number: #01-103A

4. Guzman y Gomez

guzman y gomez our tampines hub

Get your Mexican fix at Guzman y Gomez’s first outlet in the East, right here in Our Tampines Hub. Take your pick from their menu of Mexican classics like Quesadillas (from $4.50), Tacos (from $5), Burritos (from $10.90), and Enchiladas (from $14.90). Then, choose your filling from a selection of chicken, beef, fish, vegetables, and their newest option: tofu.

guzman y gomez

We had a pair of Quesadillas with Grilled Chicken ($8.50), which came toasty from the oven. Biting into this, we were greeted with oozing melted cheese, perfect for that cheese pull shot. Our favourite, hands down, was the Nachos topped with Slow Roasted Beef (top-up $1). The salsa and guacamole added a refreshing kick to the savoury, pull-apart meat. Altogether, this dish was a carnival of textures in the mouth, thanks to the crunchy corn chips.

Unit number: #01-99

5. Penang Savour

penang savour our tampines hub

A trip to nearby Penang seems unlikely in the near future, but Penang Savour brings the foodie destination to us. It doesn’t get more authentic than Penang Chendol ($2.50), Penang Laksa ($4.50), and Penang Fried Kway Teow ($5). The chendol is memorable for the red beans, which still retains some bite, homemade pandan jelly noodles, and the caramel, earthy taste of gula melaka.

penang savour

The highlight was definitely the Penang Laksa, which is less commonly found in Singapore. The broth here is rich with the use of shrimp paste, and the flaked fish topping that typifies this assam-based laksa. You’ll be needing to stop yourself from slurping up all that toothsome soup.

Unit number: B1-K10/K11
Opening hours: Daily 8.30am to 9.30pm

6. Hey Yogurt

hey yogurt

Healthy living can start here at Hey Yogurt, the brand’s first outpost in the East. They use premium Australian dairy here to make the thick yoghurt daily, and claims to be the world’s first handmade yoghurt shake.

The fruit and grains that go into each cup here are specially imported from Australia too! There are also local twists, including the Pulut Hitam ($6.50) and Lychee ($6.50) drinks. For bubble tea lovers looking for a healthier spin, the Brown Sugar Boba Yogurt ($8.80) should hit the spot.

7. JinLi Mala Hotpot

jin li mala

Another mala hotpot option in Our Tampines Hub is JinLi Mala Hotpot. If you were a fan of their Toa Payoh branch, which is now no longer in operation, this opening will be good news for you. Expect the same fresh ingredients of your choosing, served in a grand, dragon-handled pot that’s almost fit for royalty.

Unit number: #01-15
Opening hours: Daily 10am to 11pm
Tel: 9880 9430

8. Gado & Grill

gado and grill

At Gado & Grill, you’ll find Indonesian favourites such as Gado Gado ($6.00), and Bakso ($6.50), and the brand’s very own GadoMie ($6.30) and NasiGo ($7.00)─mie goreng and nasi goreng, respectively. GadoMie, as its name suggests, is the best of both Gado Gado, and the all-time favourite mie goreng. Don’t miss the Grilled Chicken ($7.00), a sticky sweet quarter chicken basted in kicap manis, and grilled. Finish the meal with Teh Botol ($2.00), and feel like you’re on holiday in Indonesia.

Unit number: B1-K4

9. Rumah Minang

rumah minang

Rumah Minang is a time-honoured, family-run institution. They’ve been around since 1954, serving Minangkabau cuisine that’s ethnic to West Sumatra, Indonesia. We know it simply as nasi padang, and they’re best known for their beef rendang.

Pick your dishes, like this Green Chilli Fish Belado (from $3.50), to go with a plate of steaming rice, and have yourself a satisfying meal. You’ll be surprised by the nuanced gravies and chillies that go with each dish on display.

If you like Turkish food, Mr. Doner Kebab is where you should go. This kiosk is run by Chef Mustafa Nergiz, whose Apple Tea ($2.50) and Kunefe ($10) are supposed to be worth the order. The latter is a Middle Eastern dessert of shredded filo pastry, soaked in sugar syrup, and layered with cheese and nuts. Of course, you shouldn’t miss the mains here, such as the Chicken Kebab ($8) and Beef Moussaka ($10).

13 Bugis Cafes For Cotton Candy Coffee, Mochi Croissants And Souffle Pancakes

bugis cafes

Laze at these Bugis cafes on your rest days

It may sound sacrilegious, but my café haunts in Telok Ayer and Tiong Bahru have become mundane. I have since travelled around Singapore in search of the next bona fide café district. Bugis surfaced as my favourite. Here are eight Bugis cafes that I feel are the best in Bugis, serving Instagrammable and tasty grub.

1. Mellower Coffee

Bugis Cafe Mellower

Because of how aesthetic it is, the Sweet Little Rain ($9.80+) from Mellower Coffee never fails to appear on my Instagram feed. A dreamy ball of cotton candy suspends over a freshly brewed cup of americano. Steam from the coffee melts the cotton candy, sending a rain of sugar to sweeten your drink.

If that strikes you as gimmicky, try their Matcha Latté ($6+) instead. It has a distinctive matcha fragrance that blends well with its milky consistency. For cakes, their Strawberry Cheesecake ($8+) and Matcha Red Bean Cheesecake ($8+) are safe bets. Both have a dense cheesecake filling with a buttery crust that easily dissolves in your mouth.

Address: 108 Middle Road, #01-01, The Prospex, Singapore 188967
Opening hours: Sun-Thurs 9:30am to 8pm, Fri-Sat 9:30am to 9pm

Mellower Coffee is not a halal eatery.

2. Twenty Grammes

Bugis Cafes - Twenty Grammes
@twentygrammes

If you’re looking for a quiet spot to enjoy some desserts, Twenty Grammes dishes out waffles and ice-cream. Their ingenious Smores Waffle ($15) has a torched marshmallow, which imparts a pleasantly smoky aroma. Top it with their selection of home-made ice-creams that are dense and sticky. They melt onto the waffles, giving it a sugary oomph.

The Hojicha Soft Serve with Waffles and Brownie Cubes ($8.50) is a crowd favourite amongst hojicha lovers. A bed of brownie and waffle pieces rests below a towering swirl of hojicha ice-cream. The ice-cream lacks the bitterness associated with hojicha, making for an enjoyable dessert.

3. Yummo Chow

Bugis Cafes - Yummo chow

Blended into the white-washed facade of Purvis Street lies Yummo Chow.  Marvel at the gorgeous interior as you enter the café, with its plain white walls and colourful impressionism paintings.

The food is pretty too. The Beef Burger ($25++) is a juicy stack of thick beef patties, dressed in cheese and greens. Take it up a notch by ordering the Tempura Ice-cream ($12++). Cold vanilla ice-cream contrasts against the warm crunchy batter, which feels sublime in the mouth.

This includes fare like their Thai Milk Tea Bingsu ($10.90++), served with milk tea ice cream, and their Shibuya style thick Kaya Toast ($8.90++), accompanied by fragrant pandan jam and aromatic kaya. They are also open till 3am, making it a great spot to satisfy your sweet tooth in the wee hours of the morning.

5. The Masses

Bugis Cafes - The Masses

The Masses was opened by Saveur’s co-founder. They aim to serve French fare at affordable prices. The CCCC Pasta, for instance, comes with crab, caviar, clams and chorizo from $14.90++. It’s an indulgent treat that gives an oceanic explosion in your mouth, with delicate notes of crab shining through. If you’re feeling rich, you could also add uni for $7++.

One of my favourites here is the Deep-Fried Camembert ($11.90++). It comprises a crunchy and slightly sweet batter that coats soft and gooey camembert. It’s accompanied by a dollop of yoghurt ice-cream that provides tartness, balancing the heaviness of the fried cheese.

6. Symmetry

Bugis Cafes - Symmetry

Symmetry is synonymous with quality brunches in Singapore. Their Symmetry Big Breakfast ($25++) is a signature, served with all the works—scrambled eggs, tater tots, smoked salmon, chicken cheese sausage, mixed mushrooms, maple-glazed bacon, sourdough, and berry butter.

For a sweet treat, the Symmetry Waffles ($21++) features a colourful plate of petals and fruits. The waffles have a dense centre that complements the velvety ice-cream. It’s a must-order for anyone looking for an indulgent morning treat.

7. Fika

Bugis Cafes - Fika
Image credit: Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro

Serving halal Swedish dishes, Fika is a great place to experience Swedish cuisine that isn’t IKEA. Try their Swedish Meatballs ($19++) for a juicy meatball that has a profound beefy taste. The cream sauce used also has a herbaceous perfume that gives depth to the rich meatballs.

Having been there a few times, their Korvstroganoff ($15++) is my personal favourite. It’s a chicken sausage stew that’s simmered in a creamy tomato base. Rice is also served alongside, acting as a great starchy accompaniment to your stew. Do note, however, that their menu is seasonal, so some dishes might not be available when you visit.

8. Belle-Ville

Bugis Cafes - Bellw Ville

Belle-Ville serves up fuwa fuwa Japanese pancakes. They are basically a wobblier rendition of traditional pancakes, quite similar to castella cakes. To achieve this fluffy consistency, they used a meringue base. This also means that the pancakes are light—so you can eat more!

Opt for the Millefeuille Pancake (from $7.90++ for four) to taste its unadulterated flavour. Buttery and eggy notes are very apparent, with the maple syrup giving a subtle sweetness. You could also try the Strawberry and Mixed Berry Pancake (from $11.90++ for two). It has a nice tartness that cuts through the meringue’s eggy flavours, making it a good choice for those who aren’t too keen on plain pancakes.

Try to make reservations in advance by calling them so you can avoid the queue.

10. DurianBB

Singapore has witnessed a small boom in durian desserts, as well as standalone cafes serving the King of Fruit. One such cafe is DurianBB, run by the folks behind a prominent durian farm in Malaysia. Their menu stars all durian desserts, coffees, and bakes, including a MSW Polo Bao ($4.80) and I’m Burnt St. Sebastian MSW Cheesecake ($8.80). They currently also have a free-flow durian buffet for different cultivars, available all throughout durian season for $36.80 per person.

best cafes eatbook top 50 awards - earlybird

Earlybird serves a menu of all-day breakfast fare, but they are best-known for their Chicken And Pancakes ($19), where a towering hunk of fried chicken is served on maple-dressed pancakes. Apart from the signature, expect the likes of Salmon & Avo ($22), a salad of miso salmon and avocado, or Chilli Scramble ($18), where spicy eggs meet thick-cut bacon and sourdough. Apart from the food, Earlybird also has a pretty alfresco area, decked in sunny yellow, with monochrome furniture that’s great for the ‘gram.

If you are dining in a group and have a bigger budget to spare, order their Steamed Sea Bass with Chilli, Lime & Garlic ($28++). Being the first Penang-centric restaurant in Singapore, Penang Culture provides mouthwatering Malaysian fare at affordable prices. As opposed to the coconutty laksa that we all know and love, their signature Assam Penang Laksa ($7.90++) is tangy and refreshing, with its use of tamarind. If you’re feeling something more savoury, get the Penang Fried Kway Teow ($9.50++). Heavy on the wok hei, this is less sweet than our local rendition but equally satisfying.

Unlike our local lor mee, this has a savoury, thick soup that’s rich with the taste of pork. Another crowd favourite is the Stir-Fried Yam (from $14.90++). Each deep-fried cube of yam is fluffy on the inside, crisp, and coated in a sticky sauce.

Double-boiled for hours, the tonkotsu broth is rich and creamy. If you’re looking for something lighter, opt for the Tamago Shoyu Ramen ($12.90++). Gurkha Palace is another eatery that does both Indian and Nepalese cuisine. Decked in elegant Nepalese decor, this restaurant makes for a great date spot, especially if you and your partner enjoy trying new types of food.

Lentils play a big role in Indian cuisine, and this is evident in their Daal Makhani ($9.50+), which combines with red kidney beans to create a luscious gravy. For more vegetarian choices, consider the Mismas Tarkari ($8.50+), starring mixed vegetables cooked in traditional Nepalese style.
