Family meals at Market Square @ Downtown East

The best family moments are always enjoyed over a satisfying meal. With plenty of dining options to choose from, selecting the right family-friendly restaurant can be daunting.

Are the tables wide enough for the entire family? Will the kids like the food? Does the menu have plenty of dishes for everyone to share? Phew! There are just so many things to consider.

We’ve compiled a list of restaurants, located at Market Square @ Downtown East, that are great for families to gather around and spend some quality time together.

1. MANLE Hotpot 满乐

Downtown East Family Restaurants Manle Spread

The vibrancy of a hotpot experience is second to none. Everyone participates in the cooking, enjoys the abundance of food, and most importantly takes part in lively conversations throughout the meal. The sister brand of popular Western restaurant chain Astons, MANLE Hotpot’s dinner buffet provides great value for the entire family with adults paying $28.80+ and children paying $18.80+ for all days of the week.

Downtown East Family Manle buffet

With over 100 types of fresh seafood, sliced meat, vegetables, and 24 different types of condiments, there’s something for everyone in the family. My favourite out of the lot was definitely batang fish, the richly flavoured fish with a firm texture commonly found in sliced fish soup and porridge. Unlike other hotpot buffets that commonly serve flavourless dory fish, MANLE serves up an unlimited supply of batang fish, turning the fantasies of every sliced fish soup lover into reality.

Unit number: E!Avenue, #02-344 to #02-348
Opening hours: Daily 11:30am to 3pm (Teochew Porridge Lunch Buffet),  5pm to 10:30pm (Hotpot Dinner Buffet)
Tel: 6386 5332

2. Yam’s Kitchen

Downtown East Family Restaurants Yam's Kitchen Spread

Step inside this bustling Chinese restaurant and you’ll immediately feel at home with its lively and homely atmosphere. Yam’s Kitchen is helmed by Chef Kelvin Yam, who is known for fish tail dishes.

The restaurant is well equipped for family occasions, with plenty of large tables and lazy Susans for communal dining and even baby high chairs so that the little ones are not missing out on all the fun.

Downtown East Family Restaurants Yan Fish Tail

The sweet smell of the Steam Fish Tail topped with Cai Poh ($24.80+) struck us just before it arrived at the table. Using red snapper fish tail, the fish is steamed in a blend of ginger and soy sauce, with generous servings of sweet and crunchy cai poh heaped onto it. Kids and lazy eaters will particularly love this dish, thanks to the absence of fish bones.

Both the Steam Fish Tail topped with Cai Poh and Hakka Prawn Cake with Chives are new additions to the menu and will only be available from October. However, the restaurant is able to accommodate any request for these new items, just ask!

Unit number: E!Hub, #04-101
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 11am to 3pm, 5:30pm to 10pm, Sat-Sun 11:30am to 10pm

3. Segar Restaurant

Downtown East Family Restaurants Segar

It’s all about comforting flavours when it comes to home-cooked food. The halal-certified Segar Restaurant replicates that familiar taste with Thai-Chinese cuisine that makes you feel right at home, along with pocket-friendly prices.

Downtown East Family Restaurants Segar 2

The Hotplate Golden Chicken ($12) comes bubbling in a thick coat of housemade, Thai-inspired sweet sauce that makes it great to share around. Kids who are afraid of spicy food don’t need to fear, the sauce does not have much spiciness to it, providing instead a slightly sour tang that tastes a little like Korean fried chicken. The chicken remains nicely crisp, despite the thick lashings of sauce, due to them being cooked twice – first deep-fried with flour, then a second time in the wok and sauce to soak up all the sweet goodness.

Unit number: E!Avenue, #02-322
Opening hours: Daily 11:30am to 9:30pm

4. Mr Chicken Rice

Downtown East Family Restaurants Mr Chicken Rice

The brainchild of Chef Steven Low, former sous chef of the famous Chatterbox at Meritus Mandarin hotel, Mr Chicken Rice serves up hotel-quality chicken rice – at just a fraction of its price.

After 32 years of serving up the famous chicken rice at Chatterbox, Chef Steven was handed the “pink slip” and told to leave the company. He decided to open up this simple no-frills store to make the chicken rice that everyone loves more accessible. The same techniques and ingredients used at Chatterbox are used here, with Chef Steven also insisting on fresh Malaysian chickens that are delivered to the store daily.

Downtown East Family Restaurants Mr Chicken Rice Set

The most popular item at Mr Chicken Rice is chicken rice, but give their Signature Tofu Set ($7.50) a try and you’ll be bowled over by how simple yet delicious it tastes. The tofu is light and crispy on the outside, bite into it and you’ll find soft and creamy goodness on the inside. A thick drizzle of garlic chilli sauce is added to give an additional sharp kick to the dish. I like how the chilli was not overpoweringly spicy, but had a garlicky taste that went well with the smooth tofu.

I’ve visited this store a number of times and each time, the consistency of the chicken remains quite high. It has a juicy and firm bite to it, and the rice is not too oily but could be a little more fragrant.

Unit number: E!Hub, #02-120
Opening hours: Daily 11am to 9pm
Tel: 6582 1302

5. Flaming Spice

Downtown East Family Flaming Spice Ambience

Newly opened in June 2018, Flaming Spice’s location in front of the busy Pasir Ris Drive 3 Close makes it an ideal place to chill out with the family on a lazy Sunday. Feel the natural breeze at the outdoor alfresco area or go for the indoor seating, which includes a cosy mezzanine, complete with lounge sofas. The entire store is tastefully decorated, with warm ambient lighting and Persian-inspired decor to bring on the #chillvibes.

Downtown East Family Flaming Spice Chicken Briyani

The Chicken Briyani ($10.50++) comes served in a huge mountain of fragrant basmati rice, and is accompanied by a refreshing serving of yogurt sauce. We found the chicken to be a little firm, but the accompanying sauce packed with plenty of aromatic spices. It’s a good idea to share just a plate of it and order other dishes such as their Fish Head Curry ($16++) as the servings are generous.

Unit number: E!Avenue, #01-309
Opening hours: Daily 8am to 11pm

6. Heavenly Duck

Downtown East Family Restaurants Heavenly Duck

With over 40 years of experience in hotels and restaurants around Singapore and Hong Kong, executive chef Jacky Liu helms the kitchen of this Hong Kong-style restaurant that is famous for their “Heavenly Duck”. The restaurant contains plenty of large tables and even has two comfortable VIP rooms where private events and gatherings can be held.

Downtown East Family Restaurants Heavenly Duck meat

Using traditional roasting methods, their Crispy Roasted Duck ($28++ for half, $52++ for whole) comes with a crispy skin that goes very well with the tender and juicy duck meat. You can also get freshly handmade dim sum, the only one at Downtown East, with the Deep Fried Beancurd Roll ($5.20++) emerging as my personal favourite thanks to the beancurd skin which was fried to crisp perfection.

It’s not every day that you get to find a Hong Kong restaurant selling chilli crab. The sister restaurant of Crab Corner in Joo Koon, Heavenly Duck also offers a wide variety of crab dishes with their Signature Chilli Crab (seasonal price) using the exact same recipe and technique as the outlet in Joo Koon. The succulent flesh of the crab went well with the tangy chilli crab gravy, which was not too spicy.

7. Sakura International Buffet

Opened in 2004, Sakura International Buffet has a long history in Downtown East. I remember climbing up the stairs, instead of the escalators, so that I could lay my hands on their teppanyaki dishes quicker. Still on the second floor, Sakura continues to serve up a wide variety of international cuisines.

Downtown East Family Sakura International Buffet Snowcrab

Prices start from $24.80++ for adults and $12.80++ for children during lunch, and $38.80++ for adults and $15.80++ for children during dinner. The entire family is in for a treat with a wide range of dishes at this halal-certified restaurant. This includes dim sum, sushi, sashimi, and their signature teppanyaki station which features meats that are fried upon order. For dinner, there’s also an additional treat of snow crab and poached salmon to choose from, with the fresh snow crab proving to be extremely popular.

Children and those with a sweet tooth will probably be excited for their Häagen-Dazs ice-cream, which comes in vanilla and Belgian chocolate flavours. You can also create your own sundaes with an assortment of toppings and sauces. Just make sure the kids don’t mix them all up and force you to eat them instead.

Unit number: E!Avenue, #02-302 to #02-305
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 12pm to 3pm, 6pm to 10pm, Sat-Sun 11:30am to 3:30pm, 5:30pm to 10pm

8. Mukshidonna

Downtown East Family Mukshidonna Outlet

Finding good Korean food is hard in Singapore, especially halal-certified ones. Mukshidonna is often packed in the evenings, thanks to its hearty Korean stews that make it perfect for the entire family to gather around and unwind during a cold day.

Downtown East Family Mukshidonna Mussels Cheese

Ordering the stews might seem intimidating at first. You place your order on a form and choose from Cheese ($13.90), Mussels ($13.90), Beef Bulgogi ($13.90), Budae Chicken Sausage ($13.90) and Mushroom ($13.90). You’ll need to order a minimum of two stews for a party of four and it’s highly recommended to mix them up together for greater variety.

The mussels and cheese make a great combination, with the plump and meaty mussels going well with the creamy mozzarella cheese. The sauce also has the right amount of sourness to it, while the tteokbokki was surprisingly soft and chewy.

Unit number: E!Avenue, #02-324
Opening hours: Daily 11:30am to 10pm
Tel: 6694 3643

9. Café 69

Downtown East Family Cafe 69 ambience

Cheerfully decorated with plenty of comfortable seats and large tables for the entire family to relax and chill the afternoon away, Café 69 comes stocked with child-friendly amenities such as plastic cutlery, cups and baby chairs for the young ones.

Downtown East Family Cafe 69 Lamb Shank

The extensive menu consists of both local and Western favourites with a wide variety of cakes and kid’s meals for the entire family. The Lamb Shank ($19.90+) comes on the bone, with a generous serving of honey barley risotto and tabbouleh salad. The fork-tender lamb fell off the bone after a few nudges of the fork and was cooked just right with the meat packed full of flavour. The honey barley risotto was also a pleasant surprise, giving a subtle sweetness to the thick and rich lamb gravy.

Unit number: E!Hub #02-119
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 11am to 10pm, Sat-Sun 10am to 10pm
Tel: 6702 6411

10. Ice Edge Café

Downtown East Family Ice Edge Cafe Ice Cream

There’s something for every member of the family at Ice Edge Café. Dads can stay rooted to their seats with the live screening of the English Premier League (EPL) matches during the weekends, while the kids will fall in love with the wide range of housemade gelato that comes with Ice Edge’s signature waffle ($12.80++ for a single scoop, $17.30++ for double). There’s a wide range of flavours, from classics such as vanilla and pistachio to more interesting variants such as cotton candy and Champagne vanilla.

Downtown East Family Ice Edge Cafe Steak

The Japanese Saikoro Steak in Sizzling Hot Plate ($34.80++) is great for sharing among the family with bite-sized sirloin beef cubes that are nicely seared to give an intense flavour. Fried with plenty of garlic and sweet ponzu soy sauce, the grade 7 Wagyu marbling also makes the beef incredibly tender, creating that melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Kent Ridge Food Places - (1)

What to eat at Kent Ridge

Previously known as Pasir Panjang Park, Kent Ridge Park was renamed in honour of the duke of Kent who visited the ridge in 1952. It is situated between the Singapore Science Park and the National University of Singapore (NUS). Unless you are a student at NUS or live around the area, Kent Ridge is probably not a place that you’d frequent.

In fact, Kent Ridge is home to many food spots that are #WorthTheCalories. Here we highlight 10 Kent Ridge food places to bring your friends and family for your next makan session.

1. Empress Porridge

Kent Ridge Food Places - Empress Porridge

Healthy food always gets a bad rep for being boring or unappetising. However, food at Empress Porridge may just change your perception that healthy food is tasteless. This family-owned eatery serves nutritious bowls of porridge that are hearty and comforting.

The Empress Porridge ($4) is the only item that is fixed on the menu. This thick porridge is definitely not just rice and water; it is a mixture of brown and white rice, cooked with dried scallops, cuttlefish, dried shrimp, braised peanuts and pork slivers. You can complete your meal with a bowl of old-school Tau Suan ($1.50) for dessert.

6. Licktionary

Kent Ridge Food Places - Lick

@fi5hbone

Licktionary is a chic ice-cream parlour found at Savourworld, Ascent. Each ice-cream flavour is named after single words like ‘Lust’, ‘Love’ or ‘Carnival’. I suspect the owners to be word game nerds. All the ice-creams are freshly churned in-house, and you can watch the making process through the open kitchen. Most flavours go at $3.80 for single scoop, and $6.50 for double scoop.

The ice-cream flavours take inspiration from local flavours to create unexpected combinations that evokes a sense of nostalgia. Inspired by the popular Chinese New year snack, Luck features the flavours of pineapple tarts. If you prefer something a little more refreshing, Happy mixes both orange and Horlicks flavours. The combo may sound weird, but it works.

One of my colleagues swears by 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist. Their Char Siew and Roast Meat Rice ($4.50) is a duo meat combo that can’t go wrong as your default order. The char siew is tender, with a sweet and savoury flavour at every bite. The roast pork has a crackling which doesn’t soften even after leaving it out for a while. If, like me, you love your meat fatty, make sure to give them a try.

There is also a savoury option – Ham & Cheddar Roll ($5) – for those without a sweet tooth.

Tiong Bahru food for a satisfying meal

From its vinyl shops to indie boutiques, Tiong Bahru is a treasure trove for hipsters, and a favourite haunt for local artists and creatives alike. By now, famous cafés like Tiong Bahru Bakery, Plain Vanilla, and Forty Hands have made a name for themselves in the famous Tiong Bahru district.

As one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhood, Tiong Bahru holds more than just your pretty café nosh. Today, we bring you through 10 Tiong Bahru food gems in this famous district.

1. Tow Kwar Pop

Meticulously grilled to crisp perfection, Tiong Bahru Market’s Tow Kwar Pop is a Singapore-style rojak that is unique in its own right. This crispy stuffed tau pok is hand grilled over charcoal, and tossed with fish crackers and a generous mix of fresh apples, shredded papaya, and thinly sliced turnips. Paired with an intense and addictive shrimp paste, this dish is served with crunchy bean sprouts and sliced cucumbers. You can get a small set of Tow Kwar Pop ($3), or go for the full Rojak set ($4/$5) to get the best taste of this dangerously addictive street snack.

Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9am to 8pm

2. Hwa Yuen Porridge

This Mixed Pig Intestine Porridge ($4) from Hwa Yuen Porridge is to die for. The porridge is cooked down to a delightful and savoury consistency, much like Crystal Jade’s famous century egg porridge. We also recommend the Deep Fried Pig Intestine Porridge ($5/$7) that gives a tantalising crunch against the smooth congee. It is definitely worth the calories.

Address: 30 Seng Poh Road, #02-74, Tiong Bahru Market, Singapore 168898
Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9am to 8pm

3. Leung San Hong Kong Pastries

There is nothing more classic than the Egg Tarts ($1.40) at Leung San Hong Pastries. At this old-school confectionery, you can choose between their famous Hong Kong-style egg tart and its Western counterpart. The former has an amazing buttery flaky pastry encasing a molten yellow custard, while the Western-style egg tart comes in a harder, sturdier shell.

There are also a wide variety of pastries baked in-house, including the Mushroom Chicken Pie ($1.40), Polo Buns ($1.40), and Roasted Chicken Pastries ($1.40).

Address: 18 Jalan Membina, #01-06, Singapore 164018
Opening hours: Mon-Sat 7:30am to 7.30pm, Sun 7:30am to 4:30pm
Tel: 6271 6056

4. Min Nan Prawn Mee

If you are a frequent customer of Tiong Bahru Market, Min Nan Prawn Mee should be no stranger to you. Sporting a routinely long queue, this stall has been a strong favourite amongst locals. Opt for the Pork Rib Prawn Noodle ($4.50/$5.50) to get a heap of prawns with perfectly cooked pork ribs that are spot-on tender and meaty. For this dish, expect a light-tasting broth with notes of prawn, pork ribs and spices.

Address: 30 Seng Poh Road, #02-31, Tiong Bahru Market, Singapore 168898
Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9am to 8pm

5. Chuan Kee Seafood

Chuan Kee Seafood boasts one of the best zi char in Tiong Bahru, where their drunken prawns, venison meat, and live seafood are definitely a cut above your average zi char stall. Some of their customers’ go-to dishes are the Coffee Pork Ribs ($12), Chilli Crabs ($68/kg), and Drunken Prawns ($20). For those with a lighter palate, their Pepper Salted Tofu($10) is a hot favourite to complement the strong flavours.

6. Big Mama Korean

Big Mama Korean’s speciality is the Samgyupsal Suyuk ($25+/$40+), a Korean dish consisting of steamed pork belly. It allows you to crave Korean food without the guilt of an oily BBQ feast, as the special steaming technique renders away any excess fat. This gives the meat a tender texture, whilst maintaining a light and exquisite taste. Their Dakgalbi ($15+ per pax, min two to dine) is also a clear favourite. Chicken chunks are marinated in a special house-made chilli sauce and stir-fried with rice cakes and vegetables on a piping hot grill. Pair this dish with a bowl of rice for a comforting, homey meal.

Pair this with some melt-in-your-mouth Sashimi ($12) slices. A must-have is their highly-coveted Shiok Maki Roll ($20); an eel, avocado sushi roll wrapped with sashimi and cheese. Topped with a blowtorched layer of Japanese mayo, the Shiok Maki is served with a generous helping of fish roe.

Address: 50 Tiong Bahru Road, Singapore 168733

8. Tiann’s Café

Tiann’s Café offers a specially curated menu for the health conscious, providing gluten-free, sugar-free, and keto diet-friendly food options, all packed with a punch of superfood. Order their signature waffles, which come with a mix of almonds, chia seeds and coconut. The whole portion waffle ($16) comes with two toppings of your choice. We got the Avocado with Smoked Trout and Scrambled Eggs with sun-dried tomato paste.

Personally, the Avocado with Smoke Trout waffle had too many competing flavours. The smokiness of the trout, paired with the sourness from the dill yogurt, cancelled out the taste of avocado. I preferred the scrambled eggs, which were light and fluffy, with just the right amount of creaminess. Pair it with a simple tomato paste for a savoury feast that packs a punch.

A family-run café nestled in a quiet enclave in Tiong Bahru, Flock Café provides a comfy space to relax and catch up with your friends. Rather, expect simple, no-frills humble brunch sets consisting of classics such as Big Breakfast ($19.90) and Pancakes and Berries ($12.90). This place is perfect to get away from the crowd and chill in a laid-back, unpretentious environment.

10. Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry

Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry serves some of the freshest nonya kueh and pastries that a bakery has to offer. I popped by the stall and got a mix of Ondeh Ondeh ($0.60), Kueh Dar-Dar ($0.80) and Egg Tarts ($0.90) – just a few out of their huge array of old-fashioned kuehs.

One of the stall’s bestsellers, the Kueh Dar-Dar definitely doesn’t disappoint. Thin, fragrant pandan-flavoured crepe rolled tightly with freshly grated coconut. Bite into it and you have a mouthful of freshness, punctuated with just the right amount of gula melaka syrup for a well-balanced treat. The sweet potato Ondeh Ondeh was also an impressive counterpart, with just the right skin-to-gula melaka ratio.

10 Tekong Food Places For Cheap and Good Meals When You Book Out

Tekong guide - cover image

Eat here after you book out from Tekong

The food in Tekong was not the best that I’ve had. Midnight cravings of a hearty bowl of laksa or a fragrant plate of nasi lemak weren’t uncommon for the island-bound soldiers. For me, food is a source of morale and encouragement. Thus, scouring for food around Tekong after book outs were a necessity. That said, they have to be cheap — I mean, recruits don’t get that much money. Well, here are my top 10 places for cheap and good food near Tekong .

1. Woon Woon Pek Bee Hoon

Tekong guide - Woon Woon Pek Bee Hoon

Swimming in thick luscious seafood soup are the mounds of seafood and bee hoon. The Seafood Platter ($30) at Woon Woon Pek Bee Hoon is big enough for three and features a rich stock that tastes fresh and aromatic. That’s because their trove of seafood is replenished daily, making it an amazing spot to bring your seafood-loving buddy and section mates.

2. Pranakorn

Tekong guide - Pranakorn

Pranakorn serves authentic and affordable Thai cuisine. For a hearty meal, get their Minced Pork with Fried Egg ($6.80). The spicy minced pork can be easily mixed into the rice, making each mouthful extra flavoursome. Even the fried egg is done to perfection, with a slightly runny yolk and golden brown edges.

Wash everything down with a refreshing cup of Thai Iced Black Tea ($2.50) that is nicely balanced with bitter and sweet notes.

Address: 4 Changi Village Road, #01-2086, Singapore 500004
Opening hours: Tues-Fri 11:30am to 3pm, 5pm to 9:30pm Sat-Sun: 11:30 to 9:30pm

3. Big Prawn Noodles

Tekong guide - Big Prawn Noodles

Despite being secluded, Big Prawn Noodles sports snaking queues of hungry people, and it’s easy to see why. Their Big Prawn Noodle ($5/$7/$9) has a mix of thin bee hoon and yellow noodles, packed in a huge bowl brimming with a thick orangey broth and generous amounts of big prawns.

The Pork Rib Prawn Noodle ($5/$7/$9) features a lean cut of pork rib that marries well with the rich broth. Speckles of shallots also provide bursts of texture and elevate the flavour of the dish.

4. 555 Villa

Tekong guide - 555 Villa

555 Villa’s UFO Pot Set features a two-tier pot with a grill and ring of soup, each heated over burning charcoal. At $59++ for two people, you’ll get a tray of fresh seafood, marinated meats, and a plate of noodles and greens.

We recommend getting the Tom Yum Soup as a base. It’s salty whilst having a lingering sweetness, culminating in a mild heat at the back of your throat.

Mani Cai 马尼菜 ($12+) is Tekong Seafood’s signature dish. It is a mesh of spinach and egg,  steamed in a light fragrant stock. A sprinkle of fried ikan bilis adds texture and a slightly salty kick to every bite. Do note that the prices for seafood are seasonal and may differ when you are there.

Tekong guide - The Coastal Settlement

Boasting old-school vibes with music of the ’70s playing in the background, The Coastal Settlement provides a quaint and rustic ambience. The food here, however, has a modernist and contemporary twist. Their Eggs Benedict ($17) is a great café favourite. Poached eggs sit atop a nest of unctuous pulled pork and fresh slaw. A cut through the egg sends the dark orange yolk oozing out, enveloping the dish in a gorgeous yellow sheen.

A great thing about this spot is how there’s an abundance of parking slots. One can easily find a place to park their vehicles.

Any good listicle on food in the far east would be amiss if International Muslim food stall Nasi Lemak was not mentioned. This stall attracts loyal patrons, ranging from office workers to army enciks.

A crowd favourite is the Nasi Lemak Chicken Set ($3.50). The fried chicken is crispy and succulent, with notes of ginger spice in the marinade cutting through the oil and grease. Like any good nasi lemak, the rice is also fragrant and fluffy.

Ayer Rajah - Cover Image

Food at Ayer Rajah Food Centre

Finding Indian or Malay food at hawker centres can hardly be considered unique. However, before you marvel at the presence of the few token prata or briyani stalls at your favourite joints, you might want to check out Ayer Rajah Food Centre.

This hawker centre has some of Singapore’s best Indian-Muslim food, including Indian rojak and mee goreng. Here are 8 stalls to check out for every kind of craving!

1. N M Abdhul Rahim Mee Goreng

Ayer Rajah - N M Abdul Rahim Mee Goreng

If you see plates of bright red noodles on the tables at Ayer Rajah Food Centre, it’s most definitely the Mee Goreng ($4) from N M Abdhul Rahim. Having been around for more than 35 years, this stall seems to have worked its way to the local palates. Though cooked only with simple ingredients such as peas, eggs, and cucumbers, it’s packed with flavour. Their secret sambal recipe adds a depth of spicy savouriness, while the use of a cast iron wok gives a smoky undertone that nicely wraps up the dish!

Unit number: #01-60
Opening hours: Daily 8:30am to 1am

2. Adhus Salam Rojak

Ayer Rajah Food Centre Rojak

Adhus Salam Rojak has been consistently coined as one of Singapore’s best Indian Rojak. A must-try is their fresh and crisp coconut fritters which are made of freshly grated coconut. Other ingredients in the rojak include vadai (crispy prawn fritters), fried eggs, and tofu, all of which go well with the sauce.

The sauce is a little spicier than the usual which makes it a plus for those who appreciate a little kick. The price depends on the amount of items you pick, but $10 would be a reasonable budget for two people looking for a good supper snack!

Unit number: #01-73
Opening hours: Tue-Sun 10:30am to 11:30pm

3. A Rashid Khan Kambing Soup

Ayer Rajah - A Rashid Khan Kambing Soup

Kambing Soup is best eaten on a rainy day and no stall does it better than A Rashid Khan ($3). Inside this spicy broth of mutton soup are chunks of mutton, garnished with coriander and leek.

The soup also comes with a plate of sliced french loaf so you’ll surely go home full and satisfied. If you are gutsy enough, do try the mutton soup with the brains; Singapore’s Michelin Guide 2017 has identified it as one of their specialities!

Unit number: #01-58
Opening hours: Daily 8:30am to 1am

4. Habib’s Rojak

Ayer Rajah - Habib's Rojak

A strong competitor of Adhus Salam Rojak is Habib’s Rojak. Like the former, you can expect to find ingredients such as fried prawn fritters, coconut fritters, fish fillet, and fried potatoes – all fried upon order.

Their dipping sauce is less spicy than the one at Adhus Salam’s. Nonetheless, it still serves its function of elevating simplicity with its sweet and spicy richness. Don’t get too carried away though – mindless picking could land you in $25 worth of ingredients on your plate!

Unit number: #01-68
Opening hours: Daily 12pm to 10:30pm

5. Tokyo BBQ Stingray

Ayer Rajah - Tokyo BBQ Stingray

It’s not all Indian cuisine at Ayer Rajah Food Centre. There’s also the well-known Tokyo BBQ Stingray.

Completely unrelated to the Japanese capital, the BBQ Stingray ($10/$12/$14/$16) here may be thicker than usual, but it is no less juicy or flavourful. The sides are nicely charred and the flesh, which has a good coating of the sambal paste, glides off the cartilage smoothly. Together with the chinchalok and chilli achar, the stingray delivers a zesty savouriness all at once. For a more complete supper, do try the Oyster Omelette ($6) and the Grilled Squid ($8), both of which will satiate any local supper cravings.

Unit number: #01-07
Opening hours: Daily 6pm to 11:30pm

6. Firdaus Prata & Briyani House

Ayer Rajah - Dirdaus Prata & Briyani House

Another stall which has earned itself a loyal following is Firdaus Prata & Briyani House. Herds of office workers can be seen queueing for this stall’s Briyani ($5) during lunchtime, and the sheer size of this dish explains it all.

A heaping scoop of yellow long grain rice is doused in curry gravy. The size of the chicken thigh is substantial enough to accompany you to the very last grain of rice. The dish also comes with a hard-boiled egg, achar, and a small bowl of gravy – a nutritious afternoon grub for anyone with an appetite!

Unit number: #01-50
Opening hours: Daily 5am to 10pm

7. Uncle Noodle Wanton Mee

Ayer Rajah - Uncle Noodle Wanton Mee

Previously called Jurong Wanton Noodles, nothing else has changed about the Wanton Noodles from Uncle Noodle. For just $3, you can get a generous portion of wanton noodles coated with black and chilli sauce, along with some char siew, vegetables, and a bowl of dumpling soup. The dumpling skin is soft and not overly doughy, allowing the flavour of the meat to come through with every bite. Take a trip down memory lane with a taste of this childhood classic!

Unit number: #01-04
Opening hours: Daily 5:30am to 3pm

8. Bowl Chap

Ayer Rajah - Bowl Chap

Started by an ex-Tippling Club trainee last August, Bowl Chap serves affordable Japanese donburi with a local twist. One of the dishes that impressed us when we were there was their 5 Spiced Apple Braised Pork Belly ($5.80)which comes with pork belly, onsen egg, and fried popiah skin on a bed of warm Japanese rice. Other options that we also took a liking to were the Chicken Karaage with Tonkatsu Mayo ($4.90) and Smoked Paprika Chicken Katsu ($5.50)!

The Baked Salted Egg Crab ($72.50) is another crowd-pleaser, as the buttery sauce couples well with the crustacean’s oceanic sweetness.

Top hawker centres in the West

Being a west-sider since young, I’ve pretty much travelled and eaten at all the hawker centres ‘round the hood. While hawker centres are not as posh or clean as cafes and restaurants, they offer the best of Singapore’s local food at wallet-friendly prices. And the best part is the variety – you can order your favourite dishes from all the stores and share them with your family and friends!

For those of you in the hood and looking for some grub to fill your tummies, here are 10 hawker centres in the West you shouldn’t miss out.

1. Yuhua Market & Hawker Centre

Yuhua Hawker Centre holds fond memories for me. I’ve seen hawkers come and go, and the hawkers here have seen me grow up. This hawker centre, located just a five minute walk away from Chinese Garden MRT, is bustling in the day and on weekends – with popular stalls sporting snaking queues.

If you’re here, don’t forget to try the hot and peppery pork rib soup from Joo Siah Bak Kut Teh, which comes with free soup refills. More of a chicken person? Xing Yun Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice dishes out really tender chicken atop fragrant chicken rice.

To cap off your meal, go for the pancakes from Granny’s Pancake. Hot from the pan, these min jiang kueh are generously stuffed with filling.

Address: 347 Jurong East Avenue 1, #01-226, Singapore 600347
Nearest MRT station: Chinese Garden

2. Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre

Another hawker centre I frequent is Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre, due to its close proximity to my house.

This is one of the rarer places for really cheap food like $2 chicken rice and $0.50 you tiao.

Fans of fish soup shouldn’t miss out on Rong Sheng Fish Head Bee Hoon. The fish soup here is delightfully sweet and tasty, and generously crowned with fried fish nuggets. Also on the must-eat list is the popular Fei Fei Roasted Noodles, which serves up al dente wanton noodles with tender char siew slices.

Address: 254 Jurong East Street 24, Singapore 600254
Nearest MRT station: Chinese Garden

3. Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre

Situated right next to Jurong Stadium, this multi-storey hawker centre is one of the earliest hawker centres in Singapore. Opened in 1972 and formerly known as Yung Sheng Food Centre, it has since been refurbished to what we know today as Taman Jurong Food Centre.

Slurp up noodles in thick, flavourful gravy from Feng Zhen Lor Meewhich sees never-ending queues. The noodles here come with either flaky fish meat or handmade fried pork balls, which add a lovely textural contrast.

One of my favourite hawker centres in the West, Jurong West 505 Market & Food Centre, was crowned “Best Hawker Centre in Singapore” in 2010 for its range of food and reasonable prices. You can find a large variety of local favourites here, such as fragrant claypot rice to QQ wanton noodles.

My weekly visits here would leave me deliberating between my two favourite stalls – Kok Kee Wanton Noodles and Soh Kee Cooked Food. I don’t usually enjoy wanton noodles but the ones from Kok Kee, while small in portion, have noodles that are perfectly cooked without the off-putting lye smell I dislike.

The chicken from Soh Kee Cooked Food is tasty and succulent. Even the breast meat is moist and tender. A personal set, which comes with poached chicken and porridge, starts from $3.50. Alternatively, you can get half a chicken for $10.

5. Boon Lay Place Market and Food Village

Known for housing the iconic Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak stall, Boon Lay Place Food Village serves up a huge plethora of local food from dawn to dusk – catering to the early-risers and night birds.

Located near tour bus pick-up points, it’s usually frequented by travellers who are filling up their tummies before heading to Malaysia.

Of course, you can’t miss out on what made this hawker centre well-known. Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak serves up fragrant plates of nasi lemak (from $3.50), complete with fluffy coconut rice, sweet and spicy chill, and well-marinated fried chicken wings.

Late-sleepers can quell those hunger pangs by pigging out on seafood at Lian Yi BBQ Seafood, and tearing meat off the bones of the BBQ chicken wings ($1.30 each) from Chong Pang Heng BBQ Chicken.

After enrolling into NUS, Clementi 448 Food Centre became my frequent haunt due to its close proximity to Clementi MRT station. During the day, this hawker centre is packed with people, making it hard to get a seat.

Chai Ho Satay & Dried Pork sees long queues for their bak kwa, especially during the Chinese New Year period. Besides bak kwa, they also sell satay barbecued over charcoal at $0.42 per stick. If you’re here for breakfast, check out Soon Lee Porridge which serves traditional Hainanese-style porridge. Be prepared to wait for 45 minutes to an hour during peak hours!

If you’re looking for good Malay and Indian food, then Ayer Rajah Food Centre is your best bet. With over half of the food stalls serving Malay and Indian fare, you can find the likes of mee goreng, mee rebus, and teh tarik here.

One gem to be found here is Habib’s Rojak. The Indian Rojak sold here is handmade from scratch by Habib’s son, who starts preparing the items at 3am every day.

If you’re looking for something different, the Donburi (from $4.90) from Bowl Chap might tickle your fancy. These Japanese rice bowls come with premium Koshihikari rice, and are served with fried popiah skin for that crunch.

8. Bukit Timah Food Centre

Back in my secondary and JC days, Bukit Timah Food Centre was my frequent haunt after school. Located on the second storey, this hawker centre isn’t as big as others. However, it has, in my opinion, the nation’s best carrot cake and satay bee hoon.

Bukit-Timah-Food-Centre-Sin-Chew-Satay-Bee-Hoon

Top picks from this hawker centre include vermicelli slathered with nutty peanut sauce from Sin Chew Satay Bee Hoon; carrot cake fried generously with egg from He Zhong Carrot Cake; and moreish morsels of barbecued meat skewers from Yong Seng Satay.

Finish off your hawker feast with Beancurd ($1.20) made from scratch at Soyako, or slurp up a bowl of sinfully good Chendol (from $1.50) from Nyonya Chendol.

One of the more popular stalls here is Yu Ji Claypot and Stewed Soup which doles out steaming claypot rice with crispy charred bits at the bottom. If you’re a fan of Thomson’s Ming Fa Fishball Noodles, you’ll be happy to hear that they have a stall here too! The fish balls here are made from 100% fish meat and if you’re not health-conscious, you can top them with spoonfuls of sinful deep fried pork lard for that umami crunch!

North-East supper spots for post-clubbing hunger

After a tiring night singing karaoke with friends till your throats get hoarse, a hearty supper is surely on the agenda. Great supper food is warm and comforting, rarely healthy, and preferably comes with a nice atmosphere to chat the night away.

From Kovan to Punggol, there is a myriad of substantial supper spots in the North-East. Here’s just 10 to whet your palette late into the night and help decide where your next supper feast is going to take place.

1. Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Mee

@jntay

Hokkien mee stalls are aplenty at Chomp Chomp Food Centre, but Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Mee is by far and away the most popular. While its appearance is unremarkable, the Hokkien Mee ($3/$4/$5) has strong wok hei and gravy with a deep seafood flavour. These are hallmarks of a great plate of Hokkien mee, so it’s no surprise there’s a perennial lengthy queue.

Chomp Chomp is one of the premier supper spots on the island, so try and get there early if you want a seat to gobble up your satay and Hokkien mee!

2. Heng Long Teochew Porridge

@hendrickdavid

Upper Serangoon Road is a hub for late-night supper spots, and Heng Long Teochew Porridge is first up among those. The warmth of a comforting bowl of Teochew porridge and braised meat is terrifically satisfying on a cool night – perfect for recovering after an arduous karaoke session. Among our favourites are the kway chap-style items, such as Braised Duck ($5), Braised Pork Belly ($4) and Intestines ($4). For veggies, staples such as Braised Cabbage ($2) and Sauteed Spinach ($2) won’t let you down.

3. Al Falah Restaurant

@lappystarry

Roti prata is a Singaporean supper favourite, and there’s a bevy of 24-hour prata spots all over the island. Al Falah is one of the most popular joints in the North-East, especially for those who love their prata crispy. Their shattery Plain Prata ($1) is best coated with tangy fish curry, and their Plaster Prata ($1.50) provides a gooey egg yolk affair. Apart from prata, other Indian supper classics like Maggi Goreng Pattaya ($6) – a guilt-inducing but oh-so-good omelette-wrapped maggi goreng – are available as well.

Address: 681 Hougang Avenue 8, #01-855, Singapore 530681
Opening hours: Daily 24 hours
Tel: 6343 7786

4. Qi Xiang Chicken Pot

north-east supper spots qi xiang chicken pot

If you want a comforting spicy hot pot to quell your post-drinking hunger, this bubbling black cauldron is for you. This Kovan stalwart’s eponymous Qi Xiang Chicken Pot ($26.90 for half chicken, $37.90 for whole chicken, $25.90 for two drumsticks) foregoes the usual light and clear steamboat stock with a thick and meaty dark soy sauce broth. The spice level is customisable, and even at “normal” it won’t burn a hole in your gut like ma la xiang guo would.

The chicken that comes swimming in the broth is fall-off-the-bone tender, but if that isn’t enough for you, augment your meal with vegetables and noodles for $2.90 per portion or pork and beef at $5 per portion.

5. Just The Place

A picturesque waterfront bistro serving Modern European fare, Just The Place is just the place to ring in a chill weekend. Located in the tranquil Punggol Settlement, chow down on everything from brunch items like French Toast ($8.90++) to mains like Seafood Marinara ($22.90++).  The French Toast is good value in particular, with three thick and fluffy brioche strips showered in maple syrup and partnered with berry compote and vanilla ice-cream.

Or you could spend the evening with your buddies, accompanied by a mug of beer and bar grub from the Just Platter ($19.90++), which contains truffle fries, Cajun mid-wings, crispy prawn twisties and sweet potato croquettes.

Address: 3 Punggol Point Road, #02-07/08, The Punggol Settlement, Singapore 828694

6. Ponggol Nasi Lemak Centre

north-east supper spots ponggol nasi lemak centre
@chee_cheong_funn

Nasi lemak is usually seen as a Malay dish, but Ponggol Nasi Lemak Centre draws snaking queues that reach the pavement every evening with their Chinese-style nasi lemak. A basic plate of fragrant Jasmine rice-based nasi lemak, ikan bilis, sunny side up and a fried chicken wing will set you back $4. But for the full experience, add some of their cai fan-style dishes like long beans and braised cabbage. Their standards are unerringly consistent, and the rice has just the right blend of texture and coconut flavour.

7. Izakaya 95

@joylxin

Also located at the scenic Punggol Settlement, channel your inner Japanese salaryman and head to Izakaya 95 to eat, drink and unwind late into the night. We usually associate izakaya food with yakitori such as Chicken Skin Skewer ($3++) and Pork Belly Skewer ($5++), but there’s a much wider selection here.

From sashimi and tempura to hot pots and grilled meat, the menu reads like a textbook on Japanese dishes. If you want to impress a date with more than just the view, get the sumptuous Foie Gras Fried Rice ($15++), which is perfumed with wok hei and chunks of buttery foie gras.

Address: 3 Punggol Point, #02-05, The Punggol Settlement, Singapore 828694
Opening hours: Mon-Thur 5pm to 12am, Fri 5pm to 1am, Sat 1pm to 1am, Sun 1pm to 12am

8. Sin Chie Toke Huan

north-east supper spots sin chie toke huan

Sin Chie Toke Huan is a veritable institute of Traditional Hainanese Curry Rice. It’s not often that cai fan stalls can pull in long queues of customers right from opening time, but this curry rice draws North-East residents like flies to honey. The curry itself is mild, but flavours each grain of rice with its distinct aroma. We recommend pairing it with their Braised Cabbage, which still retains a nice crunch, and Prawn Paste Chicken which is crispy on the outside and juicy within. A plate of one vegetable, two meats and a fish dish totals up to $6.50, so don’t expect to find Singapore’s cheapest cai fan here.

9. Yaowarat Thai Kway Chap

north-east supper spots yaowarat thai kway chap

Kway chap isn’t exactly the first dish that pops to mind when we think of Thai food, but Yaowarat Thai Kway Chap is the only dedicated Thai kway chap stall on the island. Unlike our local kway chap, this rendition comes with a clear and peppery soup, as well as noodles that peculiarly come rolled up.

To try all of their specialities in one bowl, get their Signature Thai Kway Chap ($5), which comes with tau pok, fish sausage, pork slices and offal. The fish sausage is especially noteworthy. Eat it quick to enjoy its firm bite and savoury-sweet flavour profile that’s reminiscent of lup cheong.

10. 78 Seafood

north-east supper spots 78 seafood
@susanlork

Chomp Chomp and East Coast are the places that usually come to mind when we think of a good plate of barbecue Sambal Stingray. However, Hougang natives will tell you that 78 Seafood is just as good for this spicy seafood delicacy. The thick layer of sambal is fiery and robust, while the fish itself is smoky and soft. Eaten with a generous dose of sour and salty cincalok, you won’t stop eating this stingray regardless of your sambal-induced sweat. Prices are seasonal, but expect to stump up around $15 for a medium portion.

Address: 401 Hougang Avenue 10, #01-1158, Singapore 530401
Opening hours: Daily 24 hours

Satisfy your hunger no matter the time

As someone who stays at the other side of Singapore everything north of Serangoon is basically Narnia to me. Despite that, these tantalising supper spots are tempting enough for me to travel for a taste.

Great World City - Cover Image

Food at Great World City

Granted, I’ve only visited Great World City a couple of times, but I feel like it’s one of the better malls in the Central region. After all, there are loads of stores here. That, and it’s home to the Best.GV.Outlet with the comfiest seats.

Recently, the mall went through a major facelift, which gave it a new refreshed zone that’s home to a bevy of tantalising F&B stores. We visited four of these makan places for an appetiser of what to expect.

1. MAVRX Coffee Bar

Great World City - MAVRX Coffee Bar

Nestled at the entrance of Great World City’s office lobby, MAVRX Coffee Bar is a godsend for those who need a fuss-free perk-me-up. Their menu includes a respectable selection of coffee, teas, and even fizzy drinks – catering to every caffeine tolerance.

Great World City - MAVRX Coffee Bar Genmaicha

A drink that’s worth a shot here is the Genmaicha Latte ($5.50). Boasting a dazzling green finish, the cuppa is made from a blend of Japanese green tea and roasted popped brown rice. As you sip it, you can taste the deep notes – from the brown rice – smoothly easing to a mellow sweetness, courtesy of the creamy milk.

If you’re looking to get more bang for your buck, be sure to check out their All Day Bundles (from $7) which consist of croissants and hot coffee or tea.

Unit number: #01-129
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8am to 5:30pm, Sat-Sun 10am to 5:30pm

2. Hototogisu Ramen

Great World City - Hototogisu Ramen

For ramen gourmands, Hototogisu Ramen needs no introduction. Back in Tokyo, it was conferred many prestigious awards, including a Michelin star and the title of “No.1 Ramen in Japan”. Now, it’s upping the ante with two types of oyster broth ramen – both exclusive to Great World City.

The Oyster Paitan Ramen ($15.90++) has a creamy base but still packs a robust flavour, thanks to the multitude of ingredients present. There is a strong umami from the miso, meshed with a smoky flavour from the charred corn. The dish also comes with a slice of baked lemon which helps take the edge off the broth by making it tangier.

Great World City - Hototogisu Ramen Oyster Shio Ramen

On the other hand, the Oyster Shio Ramen ($15.90++) has a clear base that’s achieved by slow-cooking oyster consomme at a low temperature. When taken together with the roasted paprika and garlic lemon butter, the dish makes you feel invigorated.

Those who are health-conscious will also be glad to know that there’s no MSG in any of their ramen.

Unit number: #01-143
Opening hours: Daily 12pm to 9pm

3. Four Seas Fish Grill

Great World City - Four Seas Fish Grill

Whether you’re on a strict pescatarian diet or an avid fan of fish in general, Four Seas Fish Grill has a menu that’ll satiate your cravings. The restaurant serves multiple kinds of fish, cooked in a variety of ways to maximise their flavour. Each set comes with steamed rice, an appetiser, a plate of pickled cherry tomatoes and soup.

Great World City - Four Seas Fish Grill Mentaiko Mayo

One dish of note is the Grilled Salmon with Mentaiko Mayo set ($14.80++). The creamy mentaiko added some richness to the fish, and gave the overall dish a slightly spicy aftertaste.

However, if you’re looking to dive head first into a world of spiciness, you can’t go wrong with the Grilled Halibut with Homemade Sambal Chilli ($13.80++). The sambal has a strong hae bee hiam taste, and slowly builds up in your mouth – making you reach for a glass of water in no time.

Unit number: #01-142
Opening hours: Daily 11:30am to 3:30pm, 5pm to 9:30pm

4. Ho Fook Hei Soy Sauce Chicken

Great World City - Ho Fook Hei Soy Sauce Chicken

The pièce de résistance of Ho Fook Hei Soy Sauce Chicken is by far their Specialty Rose Wine Soy Chicken ($18++ for half chicken, $34++ for whole chicken). Poached in an aromatic blend of soy sauce and secret Chinese herbs, the chicken is flavourful to the bone with a citrusy fragrance.

Great World City - Ho Fook Hei Soy Sauce Chicken Pork Belly

Complete your meal with the Honey-Glazed Black Barbeque Pork Belly ($12++). Drizzled in oyster sauce and rose wine, the pork has a thick, succulent layer of fat that oozes in every bite. The crunchy charred bits also give the pork a slight bitter note that adds a dimension to the dish.

Unit number: #01-141
Opening hours: Daily 11:30am to 3:30pm, 5pm to 9:30pm

Indulge at these new restaurants in Great World City

Great World City - New Wing

When it comes to new stores at the refreshed Great World City, these four restaurants are just the tip of the iceberg. Visitors can also expect to find other spanking new joints like Tim Ho Wan, Ya Kun Kaya Toast and Imperial Treasure Steamboat.

Be sure to make a family date out of your visit here as the refreshed zone also has a myriad of fambam-friendly places like Toys“R”Us, motherswork, and Amazonia!

11 Bugis Cafes For Cotton Candy Coffee, Tempura Ice-Cream And Rainbow Cheese Dippers

BUGIS CAFE FT IMG

Laze at these Bugis cafes on your rest days

It may sound sacrilegious, but my café haunts in Telok Ayer and Tiong Bahru have become mundane. I have since travelled around Singapore in search of the next bona fide café district. Bugis surfaced as my favourite. Here are 15 Bugis cafes that I feel are the best in Bugis, serving Instagrammable and tasty grub.

1. Mellower Coffee

Bugis Cafe Mellower

Because of how aesthetic it is, the Sweet little Rain ($9.90+) from Mellower Coffee never fails to appear on my Instagram feed. A dreamy ball of cotton candy suspends over a freshly brewed cup of americano. Steam from the coffee melts the cotton candy, sending a rain of sugar to sweeten your drink.

If that strikes you as gimmicky, try their Matcha Latté ($6+) instead. It has a distinctive matcha fragrance that blends well with its milky consistency. For cakes, their Salted Caramel Cheesecake ($7+) and Galaxy Rainbow Cheesecake ($8+) are safe bets. Both have a dense cheesecake filling with a buttery crust that easily dissolves in your mouth.

2. Twenty Grammes

Bugis Cafes - Twenty Grammes

@twentygrammes

If you’re looking for a quiet spot to enjoy some desserts, Twenty Grammes dishes out waffles and ice-cream. Their ingenious Smores Waffle ($15) has a torched marshmallow, which imparts a pleasantly smoky aroma. Top it with their selection of home-made ice-creams that are dense and sticky. They melt onto the waffles, giving it a sugary oomph.

The Hojicha Soft Serve with Waffles and Brownie Cubes ($8.50) is a crowd favourite amongst hojicha lovers. A bed of brownie and waffle pieces rests below a towering swirl of hojicha ice-cream.The ice-cream lacks the bitterness associated with hojicha, making for an enjoyable dessert.

3. Yummo Chow

Bugis Cafes - Yummo chow

Blended into the white-washed facade of Purvis Street lies Yummo Chow.  Marvel at the gorgeous interior as you enter the café, with its plain white walls and colourful impressionism paintings.

The food is pretty too. The Sambal Teri Wings ($10++) has a reflective sheen, courtesy of the house-made teriyaki sauce that gives a sweet and tangy punch. Biting into the wing, chicken oil explodes in your mouth, coating your tongue in a layer of meat juices. Take it up a notch by ordering the Tempura Ice-cream ($12++). Cold vanilla ice-cream contrasts against the warm crunchy batter, which feels sublime in the mouth.

4. The Green Ducklings

Bugis Cafes - The Green Ducklings
@thegreenducklings

The Green Ducklings is holed in a cosy corner of The Concourse. They serve up a spread of fusion dishes. For instance, Their Cereal Prawn Pasta ($18.90++) takes the zi char favourite and gives it a Western twist. Here, the large prawn is throned atop creamy alfredo pasta, and finished with a generous sprinkle of buttery cereal.

You can also try the Fried Carrot Cake with Nacho Cheese ($5.90++). Thick nacho cheese is slathered onto big cubes of chai tow kway, giving a creamy mouthfeel. A slight crispy char from the kway also comes through, breaking the textural monotony of the cheese.

5. The Masses

Bugis Cafes - The Masses
@themassessg

The Masses was opened by Saveur’s co-founder. They aim to serve French fare at affordable prices. The CCCC Pasta, for instance, comes with crab, caviar, clams and chorizo at $15.90++. It’s an indulgent treat that gives an oceanic explosion in your mouth, with delicate notes of crab shining through. If you’re feeling rich, you could also add uni for $6++.

One of my favourites here is the Deep-Fried Camembert ($8.90++). It comprises a crunchy and slightly sweet batter that coats a soft and gooey camembert. It’s accompanied by a dollop of yogurt ice-cream that provides tartness, balancing the heaviness of the fried cheese.

Address: 85 Beach Road, #01-02, Singapore 189694
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 12pm to 9:30pm, Sat-Sun 10:30am to 9pm

6. Symmetry

Bugis Cafes - Symmetry

@symmetrysg

Symmetry is synonymous with quality brunches in Singapore. Their Sunday roast ($26++), for instance, showcases a tender and meaty steak lathered with a creamy mushroom ragout. It’s then topped with an herb-infused smoky beef sausage and sunny side up.

For a sweet treat, the Symmetry Waffles ($16++) features a colourful plate of petals and fruits. The waffles have a dense centre that complement the velvety ice-cream. It’s a must-order for anyone looking for an indulgent morning treat.

Address: 9 Jalan Kubor #01-01, Singapore 199206
Opening hours: Mon 10:30am to 9pm, Tue-Thurs 10:30am to 11pm, Fri 10:30am to 12am, Sat 9am to 12am, Sun 9am to 7pm

7. Fika

Bugis Cafes - Fika
Fika Swedish Cafe & Bistro’s Facebook page

Serving halal Swedish dishes, Fika is a great place to experience Swedish cuisine that isn’t IKEA. Try their Swedish Meatballs ($19++) for a juicy meatball that has a profound beefy taste. The cream sauce used also has a herbaceous perfume that gives depth to the rich meatballs.

Having been there a few times, their Korvstroganoff ($15++) is my personal favourite. It’s a chicken sausage stew that’s simmered in a creamy tomato base. Rice is also served alongside, acting as a great starchy accompaniment to your stew. Do note, however, that their menu is seasonal, so some dishes might not be available when you visit.

Address: 257 Beach Road, Singapore 199539

8. Kumoya Café

Bugis Cafes - Kumoya

Kumoya café changes themes every so often. I vaguely remember the adorable My Little Pony set up before Pusheen.

For now, try the Pusheen-Loves-Pasta Truffle Aglio Olio ($19.90+). Multi-coloured tagliatelle pasta is tossed in a generous coating of truffle oil. Sauteed mushrooms are then added, giving an added layer of flavour. End your meal with the Pusheen Double Delight Fruitcake Burger ($17.90+)  a colourful and cute dessert that looks like an actual hamburger. For the Instagram addicts out there, this is the place to be.

9. Stack

Bugis Cafes - Stack

With its block colours and well-lit interior, Stack is very eye-catching. What’s more pleasing to the eyes are the affordable prices. The Makcik, for example, is only $13 and features sliced beef rendang doused in a smooth garlic aioli. Meat juices ooze out of the succulent beef, drenching the rye bread in a luscious red glow.

There’s also the Sweet Valley High ($11) for the sweet tooths out there. A country apple and peach compote are sandwiched in a doughy white bread. Rounding the flavours out is a slight lingering savouriness from the hickory turkey ham.

10. Belle-Ville

Bugis Cafes - Bellw Ville

Belle-Ville serves up fuwa fuwa Japanese pancakes. They are basically a wobblier rendition of traditional pancakes, quite similar to castella cakes. To achieve this fluffy consistency, they used a meringue base. This also means that the pancakes are light — so you can eat more!

Opt for the Millefeuille Pancake ($7.90++ for four, $11.90++ for eight pieces) to taste its unadulterated flavour. Buttery and eggy notes are very apparent, with the maple syrup giving a subtle sweetness. You could also try the Strawberry and Mixed Berry Pancake ($11.90++ for two, $14.40++ for four pieces). It has a nice tartness that cuts through the meringue’s eggy flavours, making it a good choice for those who aren’t too keen on plain pancakes.

11. Muugu Fork

Bugis Cafes - Muugu Fork

For lovers of all foods colourful, Muugu Fork has a MuUnicorn Rainbow Cheese Dippers ($9.90+). Gooey mozzarella cheese is encrusted in a light golden brown batter. When pulled apart, a colourful rainbow trail of dairy goodness is revealed. Dip them into the truffle mayonnaise for a more psychedelic experience. The earthy notes of truffles have a floral aroma, harmonising with the rich, stringy cheese.

In the same vein of gooey cheese, their Rac and Chicks ($19.90+) features a torched raclette cheese blanketing a large chicken cutlet. The raclette has a sharper taste than conventional cheese, cutting into the hearty cutlet.

Charming North-East cafes to chillax

The demand for elegant yet comforting brunch spots in Singapore is high as ever, with cosy cafes found all around Singapore. The North-East has a fair share too, with plenty of cool joints that leverage on their remote locations to craft unique and picturesque brunch experiences.

From Serangoon to Punggol, discover 10 North-East cafes that will inspire you to ditch Tanjong Pagar and Tiong Bahru on your next cafe-hopping adventure.

1. Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafè

@shirs38

Going to Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafè makes you feel like you’ve left Singapore, as it’s right next to Seletar Airport’s runway. If you thought Wheeler’s Yard was bicycle-themed, this place takes it to a whole new level, as bicycle-featuring art and vintage bicycles hang on the walls. With its dark interior, this sleepy cafe is reminiscent of an izakaya owned by a Tour de France winner.

Skyrocketing prices are making cafe hopping increasingly less accessible for students on a shoestring. But budget-conscious aspiring cafe hoppers can find solace here, as affordable bowls like Katsudon ($7.80) are available at nett prices. With a juicy chicken cutlet and a generous portion of Japanese rice, this is as value-for-money as it gets for cafe fare in Singapore.

Dishes with local flair are also available, such as Beef Rendang ($10.80), which comes with achar and yellow rice, so you can stay rooted in Singapore while watching planes jet off from the adjacent runway.

Address: 80 Seletar Aerospace View, #01-01. MAJ Aviation Building, Singapore 797563
Opening hours: Tue-Thur 10am to 10pm, Fri-Sat 10am to 11pm, Sun 10am to 10pm

2. Lickers

@feeeyawn

Lickers is a chameleon of a cafe. In the daytime, this ice-cream parlour is bright and cheerful, sporting cute, family-friendly decor. At night, it morphs into a different being, as dim lighting and neon signs with cheeky taglines give a cool urban vibe to the space.

Classic flavours like Earl Grey and Dark Chocolate ($3.80 for a single scoop, add $0.80 for premium flavours) are of course available. But if you’re feeling bold, there’s a multitude of unique flavours too. Most famous is the Yakult Oreo, which combines two Singaporean childhood favourites. The tangy yakult and sweet Oreo jive unexpectedly well, and are even better stacked on a Waffle (from $10 with two scoops of ice-cream). Good licking times indeed.

3. Wimbly Lu

The oddly-named Wimbly Lu cafe is a maverick in the North-East cafe scene, operating in a sleepy Serangoon neighbourhood since 2013. The interior mixes warm colours with natural light from a sunroof to create a cosy, homely atmosphere. Combined with the vintage VW Beetle sentried outside, there’s a distinctly retro vibe around this place.

While savoury dishes like Garlic Mushroom & Mozzarella Crepe ($10++) and Seafood Baked Rice ($12++) are available, their sweet treats are the real attraction. Lemon Meringue Pie ($7++) is a veritable classic, but the Root Beer Float Cake ($6++) and Rachel’s Earl Grey Mousse Cake ($6++) are more nouveau bakes that catches the eye.

Address: 15-2 Jalan Riang, Singapore 358987

4. Wildseed Cafe & Bar

@ngweelee

Surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, the botanically-themed Wildseed Cafe & Bar is tucked inside the ulu Seletar Aerospace Park. The scenery itself is worth a trip, with verdant greens enveloping the colonial building that houses the cafe. It’s not all for show though, as the cafe adopts a farm-to-table concept, utilising ingredients that are freshly harvested from the gardens.

@jigglytummy

Inside, there’s a good balance between routine cafe fare and innovative dishes. Their Pulled Pork Burger ($20++) caters to the less adventurous, but Thai Green Curry Chicken Pie ($14++), Chocolate Merlot Cake ($7.50++) and Pandan Churros Sundae ($8++) elicit an eyebrow raise as you pore through the menu. Even seemingly standard dishes like Shiitake Mac & Cheese ($9++) are spruced up with unconventional elements like nori seaweed and yuzu kosho.

At night, Wildseed morphs into a laid-back and picturesque bar and grill, where you can knock back some booze and admire the atmosphere as dusk falls.

5. Lola’s Cafe

Nearby inhabitants will invariably be acquainted with Lola’s Cafe, an absolute stalwart in the North-East cafe scene. Located near Kovan MRT, Lola’s provides a casual family environment, while serving up simple comfort food. It comes as no surprise that this homely joint is packed to the rafters on weekends. Expect to queue for up to an hour during peak periods.

For a non-British joint, their Bangers & Mash ($10+) is highly touted, featuring coarse pork sausages and mashed potatoes so fluffy you could fall asleep on them. The Miso Salmon Grain Bowl ($18+) is a shrewd choice for those who want to fill up while watching their waistline, while Salted Caramel Popcorn Cake ($6.50+) is a good option for those looking to satiate their sweet tooth.

6. Wild Blooms

north-east cafes wild blooms ambience

Wild Blooms is a Hougang cafe that’s every IG influencer’s dream. A turquoise-and-blue colour scheme, large tinted windows, and dried flowers galore impart a whimsical aesthetic to this eatery. As the name suggests, flowers are taken pretty seriously here, as the owners dehydrate their floral decorations themselves. There’s even an incredible four-metre wall covered entirely by flowers!

north-east cafes wild blooms food

The food is no slouch too. The jet-black Charcoal Wings ($10.90 for six) look like the product of an illegal scientific experiment. Fear not, it’s not a mutant chicken, but chicken wings coated in a spicy squid ink glaze and dotted with sesame seeds and spring onions. Its sweet and spicy flavour is reminiscent of Korean fried chicken.

The Flower Tea Jelly Cake ($12.90) by The Utopian Botanist is a visual marvel. This breathtaking dessert features a blue peony encased by cold-brewed flower tea. It is so beautiful, you’ll be reluctant to eat it.

7. Arbite

Armed with a minimalist white aesthetic, Arbite is a European-inspired cafe situated above a pharmacy in Serangoon Gardens. The name is a pun on arbeit, the German and Danish word for “work”, showcasing the owner’s stout commitment to providing a warm cafe experience.

Asian influences peek through in their predominantly European dishes, such as their famous Quorn Benedict ($12++). Quorn is a vegan meat substitute, and this dish features it as the base of an eggs Benedict rendition, complete with gochujang hollandaise. Peranakan diners will have their heads turned by the Ayam Buah Keluak Kueh Pie Ti ($8++ for 5), an amalgamation of two Peranakan favourites.

Their sweets are nothing to scoff at too, as their Pancakes with Caramel and Banana ($12++) are headlined by fluffy buttermilk pancakes and a luscious banana-salted caramel compote.

8. Seoul Good

north-east cafes seoul good ambience

An unlikely cafe fashioned out of an old container, Seoul Good dishes out Korean cafe grub in Punggol East. The interior is bright and pleasant, but there’s limited indoor seating space. Turns out containers are great for storing lots of goods, but not loads of people.

north-east cafes seoul good food

Fried Chicken is the premier Korean snack food. A heap of sticky and crispy wings is irresistible when done right. Their Seoul Good Signature Wings ($9.90 for six pieces) is slathered with a sauce made from fermented bean, honey and sesame, which permeates the meat and skin.

The Oreo With Ice Cream Milk Base Bingsu ($17.90) isn’t exactly light on the wallet, but it is big enough for two to share. Almost all the ingredients are imported from Korea, and it translates in the quality of dishes, with milky shaved ice and rich chocolate flavour.

Alice in Wonderland fans will love Kovan’s Hatter Street Bakehouse, which features quaint decor inspired by the classic movie. But the real attention-grabber is their adorable Unicorn Whoaffle ($14++). With marshmallow and lavender-white chocolate ice-cream adorning a crisp waffle, this is a dessert made for the camera.

If you aren’t into consuming mystical creatures for tea, you’ll be glad to know that this cafe also has regular waffles. The waffle has a crunchy crust and fluffy interior, a great accompaniment to ice-cream.

10. Whisk & Paddle

Overlooking a river with resplendent flora and hidden from the city’s hubbub, Whisk & Paddle is a great place to getaway from it all and unwind. When the scenic alfresco area gets too hot for your liking, head inside for a cosy and peaceful environment, lit up by a galaxy of fairy lights. It’s a great pit stop for bikers passing through Coney Island and Punggol Settlement, combining hearty grub with a stunning view.

There’s a wide-ranging menu to choose from, mostly featuring standard brunch fare. The Whisk Breakfast Pan ($20.80++) is an all-time favourite. Orchard Central Food Featured Image

Orchard Central food to enjoy in town

Orchard Central is one of the prime shopping and dining hubs in town, along with other contenders such as Paragon, Takashimaya, and 313 Somerset right next door. The sprawling vertical mall, which is the tallest mall in Singapore, has tons of different cuisine from Western BBQ ribs at Morganfield’s, to the bustling Japanese food court, Hokkaido Marche, down in the basement. Here’s our guide to dining at Orchard Central for any occasion!

Casual Restaurants

These places are good for a quick lunch or weeknight dinner. If you like hanging out in town after work or school, these places are nice to pop by at any time of the day.

1. Genki Sushi

Orchard Central Food Genki Sushi

Genki Sushi sets the stage as one of Orchard Central’s ever-crowded eateries. It’s a favourite of the younger crowd for its high-quality and affordable sushi. The sushi chain hopped onto the mentaiko trend with their smoky and velvety Seared Salmon Mentaiko Sushi ($2.80++) a couple of years back, and the dish has become a mainstay on the menu. A brand new addition is the Seared Salmon With Salted Egg Sushi ($2.80++), which offers the taste of creamy and savoury salted egg along with fresh, lightly seared salmon.

@jiababueysg

Considering that it’s located in Orchard, Genki Sushi isn’t too pricey for a sushi restaurant. If you don’t feel like getting plates of sushi, you can also get a Chirashi Don for $9.80++. This filling rice bowl comes with crab sticks, two pieces each of salmon, swordfish, and tuna, amaebi sweet shrimp, tamago, and a scoop of ikura! Definitely worth the money.

2. Nantsuttei

Orchard Central Food Nantsuttei

Nantsuttei is known for their Nantsuttei Ramen ($10.80++), which comes with a creamy, thick, and fragrant tonkotsu broth that’s flavoured with copious amounts of black ma-yu garlic oil. It’s then topped with several pieces of soft chashu that melts in the mouth. Customisation options are aplenty. You can pick between regular and Japan-size portions for your ramen, and also choose how hard you want your noodles.

Nantsuttei

The overwhelmingly spicy Dragon Ramen ($13.80++) hits you with a burst of heat right from the very first sip. It uses a house-made spicy paste that comprises minced pork, chilli paste, chillies, sake, and cayenne pepper. While it doesn’t bear the fiery look of most chilli dishes, it’s super spicy regardless.

7. Hokkaido Marche

Orchard Central Food Hokkaido Marche

The closest thing to a food court in Orchard Central is Hokkaido Marche. Located down in the basement, right next to Don Don Donki, this Japanese food court is made from a series of eight stalls that serve Japanese cuisine. There are fresh kaisen dons, meaty donburi, grilled yakitori, miso ramen, and dessert stores to choose from!

Hokkaido Marche

One of the more impressive dishes is the Buta Don with Poached Egg ($9.90), which comes with large and chewy pork slices that are drizzled with sweet teriyaki sauce. Some other notable mentions are the famous Karakuchi Miso Ramen ($14) from Sapporo, and the D.I.Y Kaisen Don ($10) that features two kinds of sashimi.

They have an extensive menu, with items such as Saba Fish ($15++) sets, Katsutoji ($15++) pork cutlet hotpots, and donburi sets such as the Sumi Yaki Tori Jyu ($14++)

9. Tapas Club

Tapas Club

A tapa is a Spanish snack or meal starter that’s typically mixed and matched with other dishes to make a full meal. Tapas Club is a restaurant that serves simple, no-frills Spanish cuisine. Henri Charpentier started out with the intention of perfecting the crepe suzette, a French dessert that enthralled the founder when he first tasted it. Unfortunately, their signature dish isn’t available at the Orchard outlet, but another must-try item is their Double Cheesecake ($7.90), which contains two layers of cream and mascarpone cheese within a crust of tasty sable crumbs. It’s delightfully luscious and sweet, with two distinct textures and flavours contained in the one slice.

The patisserie also sells their Financier Biscuits ($2.50 for three), which are little French almond cakes. The light, sweet morsels are great as gifts and come packaged in boxes of three, five, and 10 pieces.

The latter is a square dessert that has its ingredients transported from Japan, and is made from matcha powder, layers of cream, and light, spongy chiffon.

And for those who love Matcha without any frills or added sweetness from desserts, there’s the Traditional Matcha ($4++). These sets contain a bowl of pure matcha powder, hot water, and a traditional wooden matcha whisk. Eating at Dancing Crab is a sloppy and messy affair, but the sheer amount of food gives you a good reason to dig in without regard for table manners. In fact, you’re encouraged to don a bib and tear into the juicy crab legs and fat shellfish with your bare hands. The food is served in either a bag or a bucket, and then dumped onto the table for you to enjoy. Their signature combo is the Live Crab Combo With World Famous Signature Cajun Sauce ($98++), meant for a big group to share. If their tasting menu isn’t your thing, try their Westholme Wagyu Beef Rib Rendang ($36++) which is extra smoky and flavourful due to the incorporation of a myriad of traditional spices. The beef rib is tender, and the cocountty rendang adds a nice dash of heat to this great dish.

The Aunt Caroline’s Babi Buah Keluak ($36++) is their classic rendition of the popular Peranakan dish. The buah keluak creates a distinctive taste that are slightly smoky and sour. Blu Kouzina serves a wide variety of no-frills, great-tasting Greek food. We recommend their Bifteki Stin Sxara ($16.80++ for a piece). Not your boring beef patties seasoned with salt and pepper, each juicy patty is stuffed with tons of herbs, giving the beef an earthly flavour. It’s served with savoury roasted potatoes, alongside refreshing tomatoes and lemon.

Their Baklava ($6.80++ a piece) is a fitting end to this special meal. Nicely stuffed with cinnamon, almond, and caramel, this dish is satisfyingly sweet. The woody sweetness of the cinnamon, the slight savouriness of the caramel, and the crispiness of the warm pastry all come together very nicely.
